'Dr M's resignation may hasten Anwar's ascent to power'

PETALING JAYA (May 20, 2008): Current affairs commentator Datuk Dr Cheah See Kian says former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation from Umno may hasten Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's ascent to power, indirectly ushering in an Anwar era.

Asked by China Press to comment on the former Umno president's shock exit from the party, Cheah, who is the honorary principal of Han Chiang College, said Mahathir's decision to walk out on Umno and his call on party members to do like-wise is surprising. It is a political quake, he said.

"While Mahathir advised Umno members to quit party, he also urged them not to join other political parties, clearly showing that he wants a reshuffle of the party leadership to allow his men to assume power," he said.

Cheah predicted four likely scenarios as a result of Mahathir's decision:

> Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stays on as prime minister and purges Mahathir's men from the party;

> Abdullah makes concessions and sets a time-frame for him to hand over power to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak. There is the likelihood that vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin might take over the baton from Abdullah, depending on the results of the Umno elections later this year;

>Under pressure, Abdullah opts to cooperate with Anwar to consolidate his position; and

> Some Umno elected representatives leave Umno to form a new party and work with Anwar to give the latter control of the federal government.

Cheah said Mahathir does not want Anwar to come back to power, neither does he want Abdullah to carry on as party chief and prime minister, but his decision to quit the party may serve as a catalyst for Anwar to seize power, indirectly precipitating an Anwar era.

"I believe Mahathir's choice of candidate for the next prime minister is International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin," he said.

"As far as I understand, Mahathir has sent his men to contact party leaders to urge them to make a choice between supporting him and Abdullah."

Cheah said this is a double blow to Abdullah with no less an impact than the March 8 "political tsunami".

It will also have a far-reaching impact on the country, he said, adding that the outcome will very much depend on how Umno leaders and members react to Mahathir's "make or break" move after failing to sway the party with his attacks on Abdullah in the last two years.

Cheah also likened the rivalry between Mahathir and Abdullah to a fight between two jumbos, which MCA and Gerakan should stay clear to avoid being trampled.

The fight in UMNO is without doubt beneficial to Pakatan and probably beneficial to all Malaysians going forward as racial politics should be buried with UMNO's impending demise after so many years of abuse, which is still being abused now.

Three months in Malaysian Politics is utterly a long time, indeed. We, the BR, were willing to wait patiently till the 16th September 2008.

However, we all also know that the current unpredictable hugh "waves" taking place in the political landscape before the onset of the 2nd Tsunami makes that 3 months a very, very long time indeed. YAB DSAI and the PR has to be cognisant of this factor.

Hence, PR should gear itself and its momentum to take over, and I mean real soon, may be by mid-June and sock all those conniving schemers into oblivion.

Otherwise, we will all continue to suffer and the idea of YAB DSAI as our PM would remain just a dream and later then come back to haunt us as a spine-chilling nightmare. As per Datuk Dr Cheah's prediction, only the 4th scenario seems to be plausible and acceptable.

In YAB DSAI's, he does not need to seize power because the BR has already given him the Green Light to be our PM. They are willing to give HIM a chance. But, he need to fulfil all the promises made to the Barisan Rakyat on a fast track basis upon assuming full prerogative powers and NEVER ever revisit the times when he was the DPM earlier before his Baptism of Fire.

He can prove to all that he has changed for the better. Not that he was bad or anything. But, there still remains certain segments in our society, who, to this day, are still not at all convinced as far as he is concerned.

Why ? Well, I'm afraid that they have their respective compelling reasons too that might convince even his ardent supporters, otherwise.

Anyway, upon the PR taking over the Governance Of this Nation, should it even
absent-mindedly back track even slightly or even comtemplate to do so, rest assured, Barisan Rakyat! , that YM RPK and the MT Community team would be always there to ensure that they get a good and a proper scorcher on their rear ends. Please mark that last longish sentence/paragraph too !!! Cheers Folks.

Pak Lah or Anwar, mahatir mati. The law will catch up with the tyrant. He wants another crook like him to be PM but malaysians decide and not him. It is simply too audicious for him to even have that in mind. Outrageous, outrageous.

Najib? Malaysians do not want him.

DET ! U really make me sick and headache. There are already a lot of things I have to cater and solve. U have pushed me right to the corner and I have no choice but to bring DSAI back into UMNO. For those who symphatize with U can follow suit to leave UMNO.

It is best for Pak Lah to reform and joint PR with his loyal follower. Together with Anwar can reform the government and uplift the country from destroying. I know Pak Lah is a very good person but he has many bad apple in his basket. Many of his follower are so corrupted. The whole problem existed because of them.

Pah Lah pls join PR and be honors to people of Malaysia.

Half of the Umno MPs, led by Badawi, should get
together with PR and form the Federal Government.
