Malaysia's PM in danger as Mahathir quits party
Posted by Super Admin
Tuesday, 20 May 2008 12:26

(Reuters) - Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi rejected calls to step down after his predecessor quit Malaysia's main ruling party on Monday, a move that could undermine its hold on power.

Mahathir Mohamad, who handpicked Abdullah as his successor in 2003, insisted that he would not return to the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) until the premier leaves, adding to political uncertainty that could roil financial markets.

"Why should I?" Abdullah said in response to a reporter's question on Mahathir's call for him to resign. "I have work to do, I will continue to work," he said, adding that he was shocked at Mahathir's resignation.

It was not immediately clear whether the 82-year old Mahathir, who led UMNO for 22 years, would form a splinter party to fight UMNO, but analysts said the move was aimed at jolting the party to act against Abdullah and to preserve Mahathir's legacy.

"There has been too much talk and no action by those who are anti-Abdullah," said former deputy premier Musa Hitam. "So Mahathir has to take the first step. Many will follow soon."

"Then an UMNO emergency meeting has to take place to decide on PM's fate," he told Reuters.

Mahathir stepped up pressure for Abdullah to resign after the premier led UMNO, and the ruling coalition it leads, to a dismal showing in a general election in March.

His departure came three days after Abdullah ordered the attorney-general to investigate him and five others on possible offences over the appointment of judges while Mahathir was in power.

If UMNO MPs quit the party en masse and declare themselves independents, which would mean that no party commands a clear majority in parliament.

"I will not be an UMNO member as long as Abdullah remains as an UMNO President," Mahathir earlier told reporters in his home state of Kedah. He said he had lost confidence in UMNO's ability to safeguard the interest of the ethnic Malay majority, whose rights and privileges were being scrutinized by non-Malays.

"CRUMBLING WALL"

Mahathir, who joined UMNO in 1946, urged other UMNO members to quit but not to join the opposition, which is seeking to seize power from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition by wooing defectors.

"It's like pulling another brick out of the crumbling wall," said Tricia Yeoh, director of the Centre for Public Policy Studies. "Once Mahathir resigns, some others will too."

One UMNO veteran member, former Agriculture Minister Sanusi Junid, said he had also quit the party. But former Trade Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he would stay on to challenge Abdullah in internal party polls due in December.

Domestic Trade Minister Shahrir Samad, an Abdullah loyalist, said any exodus could risk dragging down the UMNO-led government.

Some doubt whether Mahathir's supporters will leave the party in droves. "There will be a few but, in the long run, I don't think so," said Abdul Rahim Baba, an UMNO divisional leader.

UMNO, backbone of the 14-party BN that has ruled since independence from Britain in 1957, holds 79 of the coalition's 140 seats.

The opposition, which is led by another former deputy premier, Anwar Ibrahim, is a loose alliance of Islamists, a Chinese-based party and the multiracial PKR, and needs to gain just 30 seats to win a simple majority and form the government.

"Mahathir's resignation highlighted the precarious political situation in Malaysia and could be negative to the ringgit currency," markets consultancy 4CAST said in a commentary.

Analysts said Mahathir was apparently upset over the allegations of improper judicial appointments.

Mahathir, who said at the weekend he was willing to be investigated and taken to court over the allegations, said his resignation had nothing to do with the case.

"That is the matter for the courts. I will go to court, they can charge me. If I'm guilty, I will go to jail. If I'm innocent, don't arrest me," he said.

Yes, Pak Lah must stay put. To hell with Mahathir. Good riddance! What Pak Lah must do now is to erase Mahathir's legacy. Drag him to court and make him pay for all the crimes he had committed during his tenure. It isn't vindictive. It's the most proper thing to do. No one is above the law. If ever Anwar came to power he'd take the same measures.

If Mahatir wins his day, the malays and malaysians would have gone backwards. Malaysia is for malaysians and not for an egoistic old demon fart like him.

The future belongs to the young and the young should not allow themselves to be dictated by someone who already had his days.

Even as an ex PM, it does not mean that he can be exempted from prosecution for the wrongs he has done. He has challenge the govt to charge him and he knows too well whether or not he has committed wrongs.

What malaysians can safely say is that if Pak Lah goes, the Lingam Report will not be followed through and that will damn Malaysia.

It is therefore necessary that Pak Lah stays or Anwar takes over as PM to see through all the necessary reform necessary to move Malaysia and the malays forward.

There is the possibility that MIC, MCA , and Gerakan might desert UMNO…
The leaders of these parties have, since after the 12th GE, been very vocal in the “Malaysia for Malaysian” concept. It would not really surprise me if these 3 major component BN members make their announcement that they have decided to join the PKR. This would be most timely after our Tun M resignation from UMNO. ..And for those who believed and had hoped that Sabah MPs will frog over to the PKR, that will happen under that scenario as these katak Sabah MPs will not want to be left on a sinking ship.
The big question would be: "Who will be the PM under PKR?".

TDM should know that UMNO members are trained to be like dogs to sniff and recognise only money. They don't believe or fight for a good cause or principle. Does TDM think many will follow him and resign ? They know the money is not flowing from TDM anymore.

There is no shortage of good malay leaders.
Malays have their eyes "opened " by recent events, Malays do not need leadership from pseudo malay, especially half breed Malabari or Kerala Sodomite Indian monkeys, like Mamakthir & gang to lead UMNO.

Time for blue blood Malays to take back control of UMNO.

The Father of Corruption, Father of Judiciary Destruction, Father of Lies, Father of Malay community destruction.

As a non member of UMNO, Mahathir does not have the right to call for the resignation of Abdullah. He can do so, like you and me, just shout and posting comments in the blog. Remember folks, from today his rights and ours are equal. He is not above us anymore. The sensible thing for him to do is to register a new party and recruit members! Unfortunately he is not Anwar. Nobody will join Mahathir! If he is thinking of joining UMNO back later, then its not quitting, its fooling UMNO!

This is a critical milestone for Anwar to become PM (as head of UMNO).
The stars had started to shine on Malaysia, with Badawi becoming PM..and the uncovering of Najib's hand in the Alantuya blast (which has neutered Najib) and allowed the country to witness a new dawn on March 8
Abdullah is correct to say why shold he resign... as he still has the support of other BN-parties and UMNO (at least until the next AGM).
Mahathir should be arrested for his racist views ...this spoilt senile megalomaniac is willing to inflame the Malays again as he did in 1970.
The madman is willing to destroy the country and relations with its closest neighbor just to be heard.

- unlike Tun Mahathir, our current PM will not abandon his ship and leave his crew without a captain; he will try to put things right (if this is still possible), and will work as usual till the next UMNO election. SO it's a waste of time forcing him to leave...

However, after the UMNO election, and he's still around, then something is definitely wrong. He knows that he has to leave, his popularity is sliding down, and if he still chooses to ignore that, he's a twit.

Hi, Rainbowseahorse

I think MIC MCA and Gerakan can never desert UMNO. These 3 parties have become parasites. UMNO is the host. They feed off the droppings of UMNO's corruption - the spillovers, and the dribblings. Without this they will all die.

The parasite must live off the host. Just my thoughts

George Soros is probably laughing his head out proving true his words that Dr M is a "menace" to Malaysian society. Truly only fools will play into the game of the imperialists that they preach so much against. A very sad scenario indeed! The world economy is already bad and now this "Menace" factor will compound the suffering of the populace. Why dont his son resign as well?

Malays have their eyes opened recently.

Malays can have power without Mamakthir but Mamakthir cannot have power without malays.

Blue blood malays have been deceived by Mamakthir, a pseudo half breed malay racist, with Indian monkey brain have deceived, mislead & stole from the malay raayat for the last 22 years in the name of bangsa and islam. Time that he should leave the UMNO and not hijack or mislead the real malay anymore.

There is no shortage of real malay leadership which all malaysians can respect. Malay need not be lead by racist, thieves, corrupters and destroyers of judiciary & their cronies.

Today, real malay can be liberated from the shackles of the UMNO monkeys, especially the pseudo monkeys, species from india, descendant like MAMAKthir.

Hello chanatak!
We all know these MIC, MCA, & GERAKAN political master is UMNO..but the way their leaders have openly voiced out their dissatisfactions, for their party members' rights, and other demands makes me wonder why they are so vocal now. Some will say that it's because these leaders have nothing to lose, but I personally think it's because they are picking a fight with UMNO on purpose to create an excuse to leave the BN coalition.
It might just happen as suddenly as our Tun M resignation from UMNO!

all and sundry know that getting rid of Mahathir or even to silence or ignore him will be meaningless as 'mahathir' lives on in the millions of Malaysians still...dream on, ya? Why not focus on making Malaysia a better place rather than be distracted by one man's ideals? After all mahathir has no designs to come back as PM or UMNO President. So, what gives? Why are we so excited about it, unless of course behind all the curses and recriminations of the man, we are actually scared and blue with envy for his forthrightness...

Mahathir is trying to force a new General Election to
prevent the Opposition Alliance coming to power. He
thinks the BN under Najib and his son can make a big
comeback in a fresh General Election.

Mahathir will use money to pull away at least 30 MPs
from BN to cause a collapse of the Badawi Government
before the Opposition Alliance has a chance to take
over the Federal Government.

If Badawi is smart, he will form a coalition
government with PR.

TDM has chosen to leave UMNO when the president is somebody he dislikes, or more accurately he despises. That is defeatist. But then the purpose was not only to show displeasure of the president, but to hope that other admirers would blindly follow. As a has-been politician, not a statesman mind you, would people believe that there can be gains to follow him? TDM might be suggesting that his son could possible be the next but one PM. But TDM knows only race politics, and that formulae will be outdated when the next PM, most probably the person before his 40, retires, 35 years later. So TDM cannot possible start a political dynasty like Razak and Hussein Onn. The bet would be to follow the richest son-in-law.

TDM might have given the impression that his resignation from UMNO had been a calculated move had he registered a party ahead of his resignation. But that resignation announcement was done at the spur of the moment, to answer to a challenge. TDM might now be regretting it, since his son Murkriz was absent at the MP briefing session conducted by PM AAB today. The son has not followed because of a lack in confidence that resigning was a better choice. If the son did not follow, who would?

Having no political party to turn to, whoever follows TDM out of UMNO will be non-entity. They cannot have tea party or open house free of charge until there is a party to call home. As UMNO activities have always been a struggle with the stomach tucking in free goodies, a change in lifestyle can be quite unsettling. As PM AAB is known to prefer elegant behaviour, either silence, sleep or do nothing, whoever follows TDM would have a long wait. PM AAB's elegant inactivity might end up with everything done in his favour!

TDM is trying to avoid the investigation on him on Lingam's scandal..he knows that Pak Lah in his natural fashion will allow the investigation to follow...thus exposing him and his evil deeds to the whole world. TDM wants to die as LEGEND...he fears the loss of his SO CALLED LEGENDARY REIGN ...than death..he knows that his Najib can do better than Pak lah to eliminate all evidence, cases, and filth of his past administration. he has purposely forgotten the proverb: takut kerana salah...berani kerana benar. if he is so self righteous and always project that others are so corrupted and himself NOT- then why should he fear...let the due process continue...UMNO DOESNT crash because of Pak Lah...it is GOD'S WILL...and now the time to empower the rakyat to rise ...TDM thought he can play GOD...he just couldnt believe what has happenned this year and he is now doing so many ridiculous things that seem to embarass us Malaysians to the rest of the WORLD...what a joke. IF TDM thinks he is clean in the Lingam Gate matter...then relax...BUT THE FACT HE IS THE ROOT OF THE LINGAM GATE MATTER- now he blames others and even made one opposition leader to say that it is not right to investigate TDM because it is the fault of the JUDGES that kept pressing on TDM ...but the fact is that this isnt so - AS TDM already sworn and said...no one influences him on JUDICIARY matters...he makes his own DECISION....REALLY HOPE THAT TDM BE EXPOSED FOR HIS CRIMES...in fact the whole of UMNO AND ITS COALITION PARTNERS started from Day one and overstayed for so long ...WORLD RECORD- that corrupted them so much that corruption became like an OLYMPIC competition- where politicians compete with themselves to see who got the BIGGEST SLICE OF THE MALAYSIAN / RAKYAT'S WEALTH- smaller | bigger

Mahathir is a Muslim and in Malaysia all Muslims are
considered Malays if they habitually speak the Malay
language and practice Malay culture and customs.

True, that Mahathir wrote Indian Muslim as his race
when entering the University of Singapore to do
medicine. This was revealed by Lee Kuan Yew himself.

But this should not detract from the constitutional
definition of a Malay. Hence, Mahathir is a
constitutional Malay.

Also, it must be remembered that the great majority of
the Malays in Peninsular Malaysia are in fact not
Malays but Bugis, Minang, Javanese, Achenese etc etc
It was the British who called them Malays. In fact,
USM has done a study on this.

Malay nationalism was something invented in Singapore
by the Kakas and the Jawi Peranakan (children of Kaka
fathers and Malay mothers) and not the other groups
from Nusantara who now call themselves Malays. That's
why Malay politics is dominated by kakas, followed by
mamaks and Arabs and not the other groups from
Nusantara who call themselves Malays.

Has anyone out there heard of Mamakakhir(001)making comments on Altantuya case?I haven't and I personally feel that he ought to know a thing or two as to who is involved and gave orders.Just a thought...if u were a "father" to this country for 22 years,u surely would know practically everthing about the country like the back of your palm.A highly dangerous item like c4 can only be in control by the top millitary or special force in the country.Similarly, incoming passengers' personal data in the computer system can only be accessed or deleted by a certain pengarah or higher up.Mamakakhir may have these bullets left to implicate those slimeballs who hv wasted Altantuya.I just hv this feeling that thru the power of The Almighthy...we may know who is the real murderer soon...can u feel the tremor already?

On the contrary, it's the ex Honorable Mahathir who is in danger of being indicted for corruption in "judges fixing". The Commission's recommedation to investigate him should be carried out without further delay. Oh yes, he may bring out his "black book" giving details of corrupt practices of those still in high political positions and cry "foul play" or selective prosecution. Since he did this to Anwar, who cares about him now? But those he disadvantaged during his 22 years of ruling cant wait to see justice served on him. Syabas to Pak Lah who has elevated the image of the government to world class now.

It would be a great blessing for the country if all the Ultras follow TDM and resign.

When UMNO is purged of these shameless, greedy, manipulative, corrupted and arrogant vermin's then UMNO will have a chance to rebuilt itself as a party which is truly interested in the welfare of all the citizens and especially the poor!

It would make the task of AAB to keep his 2000 election promises much easier and realizable. Well AAB stay your course and don't ever said that Allah has not help you!

AG is pursuing RCI's report, and if TDM now deserves hopitality of His Majesty's services, UMNO members would be happy to bid him good bye.
