Dr M resigns from Umno after answering ‘dare’ to be first to quit PDF Print E-mail

By : Noor Adzman Baharuddin & Adib Povera, NST

ALOR STAR, Mon: After goading Umno members today to temporarily resign from Umno as a sign of protest against the party president, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took up a “dare” to take the lead by resigning from the party he had been a founding member of since 1946. However, he implored Umno members taking up his challenge not to join any other party and remain independent, at least until the Umno leadership was determined (after the December party elections). He said he will only rejoin the party when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi steps down as Umno president.

Dr Mahathir was answering questions from the floor after giving a talk at a forum entitled 'Malays’ Future after the 12th General Election' at the Star City Hotel in Alor Star when a member of the audience asked him if he would take the lead in quitting Umno.

“Wah, saya di cabar ni…(I have been dared),” he quipped but in a serious tone, he said: “Yes, I will leave Umno….until the party leadership is determined. Other Umno members should follow me.”

Loud cheers immediately met his declaration. It is not immediately clear if his son, Datuk Mukhriz, also the MP for Jerlun and an Umno Youth Exco member, would follow suit. The former Prime Minister's announcement also caught his aides by surprise.

Dr Mahathir explained that this was not the first time he was out of Umno. “Between 1969 and 1970, I was expelled from Umno but later, when many Malays and Umno members still supported me, I re-entered Umno. There was no problem. Just don’t join other parties.”

At a Press conference later, Dr Mahathir said he will submit his resignation from Umno as soon as possible.

He insisted that his resignation had nothing to do with the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Lingam video.
“I am just protesting against the Abdullah’s leadership of Umno and country,” he said.

In an immediate reaction, Gerakan secretary general Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye expressed shock at Dr Mahathir’s resignation. “This is shocking, it’s hard to believe. I hope this will not bring further instability to Barisan Nasional. I also hope things will settle down and the matter resolved in a calm manner.”

MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said it was unfortunate for Dr Mahathir to resign from the party which he had been a president for a long time. “His instigating others to follow suit in light of the current problems faced by the party, will further weaken it. We hope other members will be clear-headed in this matter.”

Did Tun make the right choice? Would his resignation makes any diffrent to all? He's no longer the PM, but he was our PM. He still deserve to be respected by all. After all he did lead malaysia to a higher level. But out of all, i firmly believe Tun should be standing beside Badawi and support him and as for Badawi he need whatever support he could get more than ever. Too bad, all of them say " We're rational" but actually, they're emotional. To me this all political gimmick smilies/grin.gif, only fools fall for it.

Congratulations Mahathir, this is the best thing you have done in your entire political career.

You have been the most divisive and vindictive person I have known. You have been inciting racial disharmony for a very long time to achieve your goals. You are one of those persons who was responsible for the May 13 racial violence. You were one of the main instigators of racial riots exploiting the vunerability of the late Harun Idris. You are the sort of person who will sell your own mother to achieve your political ambition i.e. to become the PM of Malaysia.

You are not the father of modernisation but rather the Father of Destruction of Malaysia's god given natural beauty.

Get loss from the political arena. Majority of Malaysian now know your true colours. You are now a political dinosaur.

I thought RPK said that 1946 party died out many years ago, and this is actually another party? Does this party's date of registration go back to 1946 in the ROS?

AND He insisted that his resignation had nothing to do with the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Lingam video.

You believe him? I don't. He is scared shit of appearing in court this time. He knows he can't use the "I do not remember" line anymore. Nobody believed him, but everybody laughed at him. And he has no explanation, so he has threatened a can of worms hoping it will deter action against him.

You believe him that it has nothing to do with the Lingam video? I don't

If every UMNO members who oppose Badawi were to resign temporarily, how can Badawi be toppled?

Those who will remain in UMNO will be Badawi supporters. When UMNO EGM/AGM is convened in December 2008, Badawi will have a resounding victory because only UMNO members are allowed to vote.

That is a silly plan to get Badawi to step down!

If you had noticed my comments so far u guys may have noted that I have indicated again and again that TDM is as crafty as a fox. However, I have to agree that he outdid it this time. By resigning and asking those close to him (his blog has indicated to him his influence i presume) to resign he is cleansing umno. (birds of a feather flock together). The leftovers for umno's sake will have all the good guys (if it happens). If so, umno would generate into a better party I hope (where do i put Khairy...ok no so good..agreed). majority of umno should be good. AAB should now declare he has cleansed UMNO and attract the malays (the real godlies) into umno. Secondly, Anwar can discreetly ask his guys in umno to resign too and form the new government...mahathir by his greed has created for FPM (future Prime Minister lah) a way for FPM's guys to leave umno. When they sign or join PR it is legitimate. HAHAHA. he who laughs last laughs the loudest. So i apologise to you guys again. I am truly sorry that I cautioned you guys too many times about the intelligence of TDM.

My dear brothers and sisters
In Malaysia Indian muslims are commonly referred to as mamak - which I must add is not really well liked among the true Indian Muslims. Indians Muslims came to this country as traders and have been serving the community through the many sundry shops of yesteryears and today by feeding many of us into the wee hours of the night.

Therefore please refrain from using the term mamak in any derogatory way, and least of all do not associate TDM with mamak. I am not sure of his parentage but he is certainly not Indian Muslim! Thank you.

When he ask everyone to resign from UMNO, does that include his family members, especially the one from Jerlun?

If close family members won't follow suit, how can he expect other to emulate? It's like saying, 'I'll get off the gravy train and all of you follow me, but never mind the kids. They are just taking a swim in the gravy pool, but not slurping it."

Incidentally, his resignation came on an auspicious day. Vesak or 'Buddha's Birthday' is the major Buddhist festival of the year as it celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. For many, this day would be remembered as a day of departure for the founder of UMNO Baru from the party he created, while for the departer, a day of enlightenment, that 'you can fool some of the people all of the time and all the people some of the time, but you will be the biggest fool near the end of your time.'

TDM departure might just be the point UMNO needs to solemnize far reaching political reflection, as should any organization when triggered for continuous improvements. UMNO has certainly grown over time from a political party in which her nobler objectives have been overtaken with a zeal bordering insanity for money and more money which has spawn self supporting system of cronyism and twisted application of the NEP for which some call corruption. The tentacle of this system can be very divisive, and loyalty goes out of the window the moment one is no longer within the pecking order – a diagnosis applicable to TDM and Sanusi Junid recent move to depart from UMNO.

When UMNO decides to introspect, remains to be seen if members would reach for:
-Universal values
-Meritocracy
-Magnanimity

How could Mahathir resignation from UMNO be able to topple Badawi or cause him to resign?

If Mahathir and his supporters resigned from UMNO, who would be left in UMNO – supporters of Badawi! So when UMNO general assembly is convened in December 2008, Badawi, instead of being voted out, would have a resounding victory because only his remaining supporters would be entitled to vote. If anything, it will be a god-sent gift for Badawi and his gang! Good riddance as Hamidi had said on the resignation of Mahathir – it really takes a huge burden off their shoulders.

Does Mahathir think there are that many UMNO members who truly love the party above everything else? Most of them won’t last a day outside UMNO devoid of hand-outs and fat contracts. Only a few old die-hard Mahathir supporters will resign from UMNO to follow suite. I doubt even his son from Jerlun will resign from UMNO.

That’s a silly plan from Mahathir if his real intention is to topple Badawi. His real intention may be to jump ship realising that it is sinking.

This is another incident of the whole infrastructure and culture of corruption, mismanagement and arrogance that Mahathir built over the 20years collapsing around him.HUBRIS..!!
Mahathir is seeing for himself all that he planned or built being torn down one by one..
- One of the first shocks for him was when Abdullah his hand picked successor would not listen to him but to his son - in -law instead! He wanted to be puppet master( dalang) but PAk LAh prefered to dance to the tune of a member of his family!!
-then the exposure of the Lingam tapes and the rot in the judicairy that he nurtured , starting with the Tun Salleh Abbas dismisal, then brow beating the judiciary and the legal system, culminating in the show trial to imprison his political nemesis, Anwar Ibrahim. Now he is seeing with own eyes all the dirt that he allowed to fester in the judiciary exposed!!

He is leaving the party that he created..UMNO Baru!! He destroyed the UMNO the Tunku Abdul Rahamn built.

He shall see that people will not care about him ...and he will probably die a lonely and broken man..his legacy in tatters..only the biggest and the longest..mega projects will remind people in the future of a megalomaniac.

A sad end to such a man..but JUSTICE OF Allah shall always triumph , despite what man may try to do..

Tun Dr. Mahathir's resignation from UMNO is a strategic (cunning) move. It is certainly not about putting pressure on Badawi to quit. It is all about staving off the impending inquiry into Mahathir's role in the unsavoury activities involving the appoinment of judges when he was the PM. The Royal Commission has concluded that the revelations of the Lingam tape warrant action against the parties involved including Mahathir. Badawi, though appearing to be slow, is putting pressure on AG Ghani Patail (a supporter of Mahathir, once) to start the process and investigate Mahathir and the others. The only way that Mahathir can prevent such an embarrasing enquiry is to up the ante by resigning from UMNO in the belief that Mukhriz, Hishamudin, Ghani Othman, and other staunch supporters will be able to instigate a mass exodus from UMNO in support of Mahathir. Such an exodus, if it happens, cannot be ignores by Badawi and he will have to be forced to stop the investigation into Mahathir as that could lead to mass riots (like what happened in the case of Anwar). But the smart and cunning Mahathir have misjudged the Malays this time. The Malay of today is not the type he once treated as kids and immature when he was in power through his frequent scolding and scathing insults about their loyalty, character and intelligence - recall the various UMNO assemblies and his frequent comparison of the Malays against the Chinese (In fact, no one has insulted the Malays to the extent and degree as Mahathir has done.) Mahathir is in a for a nasty surprise. He will be a lone old man. Not even his son Mukhriz will resign.

If Mahathir fails to get the expected exodus from UMNO in support of him, he will resort to creating instability in the country. His recent racist speeches are a prelude and warning in this regard. Let us all be vigilante. Mahathir will start race riots if he fails in preventing the investigation into his role in the decadence of the judiciary. Mahathir is unscrupulous when it comes to saving himself.

Old Man kicks himself out of UMNO to psycho the less intelligent members, but tells his son to stay put be'cos there is "MORE" yet to be "COLLECTED". Wait till our kitty reach the TRILLION figure, then his family will tell UMNO to go to HELL. So, OLD MAN... we know your move, CHECK-MATE to you and kepp your mouth shut instead of playing up race issues. Better tell your son to quit as well and you guys can migrate back to India if you are not happy here. I will follow you soon, but if only when the Ass-holes UMNOPUTRAS who said that to us can arrange for our choice of our country. If they can't, then they should also keep their mouths where their Arse is.

Noor adzman Baharuddin & adib Povera, NST

Get ur facts right about UMNO and UMNO(baru). The former was killed by the man himself. The then set up UMNO(Baru) over UMNO dead body so that he need not face a rerun of presidency contest against Tg Razaleigh.

He did comment on tv that UMNO(baru) now is no more democratic. My foot....he who made UMNO(baru) undemocratic by introducing many new rules to staff off any potential challange to his presidency.

Dont be taken by this mamak latest ploy - UMNO(baru) is his SPV and he set it up tailored for himself only. It just his way of putting pressure on AAB not to pursue investigation on 6 ppl named by lingam report. The man is really a sumbag- nothing is too low for him if it can save his skin....
