Another tricky balancing act for Pak Lah

The Malaysian Insider

In any case, the party secretary-general is angry. And that is not good news for Abdullah. Tengku Adnan has been a key player in helping Abdullah silence critics who were calling for his resignation following the March general election.

Tengku Adnan Mansor is livid, contemplating resigning as the secretary-general of Umno. Some party officials are upset with party-owned newspapers for breaking the Cabinet embargo and parading two party stalwarts – Tengku Adnan and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad – like members of a rogue’s gallery.

And most party members are swinging between nonchalance and ambivalence over the explosive contents of the Royal Commission Enquiry’s report on the V.K. Lingam video clip. So while many in Malaysia are celebrating the candour of the commissioners in identifying Lingam, former chief justices Tun Ahmad Fairuz Abdul Halim and Tun Eusoff Chin, businessman Tan Sri Vincent Tan,  Tengku Adnan and Dr Mahathir as members of an "insidious movement" that influenced the appointment and promotion of judges in the late 1990s, the response in Umno is one of disquiet.

In their minds, the enquiry into the video clip only served to diminish the standing of the government and the ruling party among Malaysians and was a key factor in the rise of the Opposition in Election 2008. Professor Shamsul Amri Baharuddin, a political commentator, noted: "To Umno members, the Royal Commission is about Anwar exacting revenge against Mahathir. The report is not really relevant to them."

An Umno MP added: "The feeling in the party is that the government should have never entertained the idea of setting up the commission. Members cannot understand why it is so important and they are upset that Dr Mahathir is being implicated...That is why the PM has to walk a fine line of meeting the public’s demand for a thorough investigation into the state of an important institution and the party’s demand of protecting its own."

Appear too exuberant about the commission’s report and he will be punished by party members who still have not forgotten his role in the election debacle. Appear disinterested in the commission’s findings and he will be slammed by the public who still remain unsure if he can be the reformer of Malaysia.

The video clip of Lingam speaking to the Ahmad Fairuz in 2001 on judge fixing was disclosed by de facto Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim last year. It created a buzz and put the government on the defensive. To find out if the tape was authentic and contents of the conversation were real, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s government convened a three-man panel to investigate the matter.

The panel recommended the setting up of the Royal Commission. In its report which was made public on Friday, the five-member commission said that based on evidence and witness accounts, it confirmed that the Indian man in the video clip was Lingam and that he was conspiring on the telephone with the Ahmad Fairuz on the appointment and promotion of judges.

They also said that Tengku Adnan and Vincent Tan were key fixers in this scheme where candidates for the judiciary suggested by the then Chief Justice Tun Dzaiddin Abdullah were tossed aside in favour of names who would be friendly to them and the government headed by Dr Mahathir.

The commission noted that Dr Mahathir did not follow the constitutional process of consulting with the CJ before appointing or promoting judges. It recommended that the Attorney-General consider investigating all the main players in this episode under the Penal Code, the Sedition Act, the Official Secrets Act and the Legal Profession Act.

But even before the Cabinet decided that the report could be made public it caused disquiet within Umno. The decision by the New Straits Times and Berita Harian – papers owned by Umno – to publish front-page reports on Friday angered Tengku Adnan, Dr Mahathir and their supporters.

Tengku Adnan’s supporters felt that as secretary-general of the party he should have been afforded better protection by the party leadership and wonder why newspaper affiliated to Umno led the way in lynching him. Was there a hidden agenda or was it an editorial decision by the newspaper to regain some ground after being scooped by The Star?

The government has moved to dismiss talk of a conspiracy by lodging police reports against the newspapers and tracking the source of the leak.

In any case, the party secretary-general is angry. And that is not good news for Abdullah. Tengku Adnan has been a key player in helping Abdullah silence critics who were calling for his resignation following the March general election.

By all accounts the PM had managed to strengthen his position on the ground by mapping out a succession plan and seemed a strong bet to defend his position as the party president in December.  But the commission’s findings and the public’s desire to see some blood could unsettle this fine equilibrium in Umno.

Abdullah has tried to straddle the middle ground. His Cabinet has ordered that the report be made public while urging Malaysians to allow the AG to complete his investigations into the commission’s recommendation and not prejudge anyone.

"Don't make it an issue, or use it as an avenue to make accusations and presumptions, for the sake of creating a public or media prosecution," he said.

Still, he will have to confront some tough choices. Does he retain Tengku Adnan as the party secretary-general as demanded by Umno members or does he choose a replacement as expected by the rest of Malaysia.

Party or public? That is Abdullah’s dilemma.

wow, wow, wow, should the truth be known by all? UMNO can die for all who care but the truth, the dignity of malaysians are paramount.

Thank you, Pak Lah, God bless u richly and Malaysians will fondly remember you for that good deed. Malaysians from now on will look towards you fondly but please finish the work.

The question of protecting the umno secretary and the ex PM does not arise. Malaysia cannot continue to live in lies. The truth must prevail.

Thank you Pak Lah, for we know that if you have surrender the leadership to another, the RCI report would not have seen the light of day. Thank you GOD.

So as far as UMNO is concerned , it can break the Law-- because they own the papers they should do all they can to cover the shit on the ground.

Logically --- the AG should put all the upstarts into prison for thinking so.
Are we managed by Kampong laws or Laws of the land . When will these 50 year old morons ever grow up ---------- the greatest problem faced by them is the monetary ocean is getting dried up --- so all these rigormortis !!!

Interpretation: - To UMNO, the truth is not important. It doesn't matter an injustice has been done, as long as the injustice is unto others.

Bad! Real Bad! UMNO claims to represent Islam and justice. This is UMNO's brand of Islam and justice.

PAS is much better. PAS is honest and truthful. PAS may offend with their remarks, but they are made honestly even if these remarks are less than tactful. PAS is honest. UMNO is not.

- If UMNO members are not for the Royal Commission Enquiry, then UMNO members are not standing for Justice, hence not for the people of Malaysia. In that case, to the people of Malaysia, is UMNO still relevant?

When I had a civil case in the 90's i was told by my lawyer friend that i could solve the problem if i see Lingam, which means the legal fraternity knew the goings on in the judiciary. I however settled the whole matter out of court, knowing that my richer opponent may win the case without basis. Just multiply that to all the poor citizens, how difficult was our life because of this lingam senario. If umno had nipped the bud at that time. Stopped this 6 people at that time, now they may not go through this problem. God is great. He who sows the seed, should reap its benefit. So be it.

Even a broken clock is right twice daily. Therefore, even a sleepyzzzzzzzzz PM is useful and offers opportunities for truth to be revealed.
Looks like the genie or should I say, ogre has been unleashed by the unsuspecting PM. There is no way he can fix things from here.
Best advice we can offer AAB now is to just go back to what he does best......... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

You Dr M talk bad about PM, I Paklah will get back to you. this is natual law, law of gravity #3, there is a action, there will be a reaction.
Now, who is right and who is wrong ? no rite & no rong! this is the fallout when you have greed & power that only take care of the selfish, the self serving powerful people. The really good government will take care of the rakyat, and if you take care of the rakyat, you will not have this kind of problem, the powerful, they use their position to enrich themself and their cronies, when that is not there, Dr M is very angry bec he cant get the money he and cronies used to have, hence they have anger.
The Paklah they also have amass so much fortune, they dont want to stop, so they have power struggle, so this is the corrupt Umno and BN.
the only way is we get the MPs cross over the pakatan rakyat.
PM Paklah got a point, if the Dr M is against the law, we must get him the appropriate treatment, no body is above the law.
same thing, if the PM paklah is not doing his job, we must get him out of the gov, so it seem, the best thing to do is to get the new PM from Pakatan Rakyat,
at least, Wan Aziza, dont seem to have experience in corruption,
we need clean gov.

All these are symptoms of a party that was never built on a strong moral fibre, patriotism or self sacrifice. It was all about self interest, and enrichment. Integrity was never its forte.

One of the greatest weakness in UMNO is that its members tend to protect wrong doers, be it corruption, carrying millions in a suit case, abuse of power or even rape.
They do not care to think if Mahathir and Adnan were wrong. But they cry for blood when the opposition commits even the smallest of crimes.
Abdullah made a blunder when he appointed Adnan as sec-gen when his character was already tainted. The mill-stone to drag down Abdullah will be the Mat Tyson.

There is no dilemma. In politics, the voters are the boss, not the party. If the party do not heed the public's demands and needs, it might just as well close shop.
Meanwhile the Opposition has served up a delectable alternative. What do we the public care if UMNO sinks or swims?
The detractors should follow Dr M's initiative. Resign and become independent. Maybe we will have another snap GE?

It is now clear that UMNO top members are corrupt. Tun M and Tengku Adnan. Big shame. For Bodowi now to save himself, he must take firm action. But as usual , he will make a half past six effort. AG will say no evidence, IGP will stay quite, ACA will pay the secretary another RM3,000. Najib has already said they may not prosecuted. When will this UMNO shit heads ever learn that we are their masters and not the other way round.

Meantime nothing is done about the Zakaria palace, Said Yusof log smuggling, PKFZ, and so many more.

With all that talk of Sabah, and even Sarawak, MPs mass exodus to the PKR, and then the sudden resignation of Tun M from UMNO, I think we Malaysian can now just sit back and watch the following events unfolding:

1)MIC, GERAKAN, and MCA pull out from the BN collation.
2)MIC, GERAKAN, and MCA announcement that they are teaming up with DAP, PK, and possibly PAS. To form PKR.
3)Parliament will have to be dissolved to make way for the newly formed government.
4)Approval is sought from the Agong for appointment of the new coalition government.
5)UMNO, and any other remaining component parties, are now the opposition party.
6)This one I cannot figure out yet: “And _________ is the new Prime Minister of Malaysia”.
