IT’S been five weeks since the general election. The Barisan Nasional was returned to power, albeit with a smaller majority and the loss of five states.

Despite the shock of the result, it was still a mandate that no one could argue with, not even Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his wildest allegations of electoral fraud.

But what has Umno, the leading partner of the coalition and largest party in parliament, been doing since March 8? Bickering, pointing fingers, baying for vengeance and doing everything imaginable except rolling up its sleeves and getting down to the work of governing.

Enough is enough.

People are getting fed up with Umno’s moaning and groaning, the political wayang and sandiwara its cast of characters is playing up and down the country.

The truth is that the people have long been disgusted with the kind of boorish, loutish behaviour that Umno leaders had exemplified because of their grip on power since independence in 1957.

Brandishing the kris was hurtful to the non-Malays but the party leadership did nothing to take the Umno Youth chief to task for the menacing and insulting gesture. Which was why he was emboldened to repeat it and provide extra impetus for the Chinese and Indians to abandon the BN at the polls.

It also did not go unnoticed that the leadership put up with the racist and inflammatory rhetoric of the delegates at the televised 2006 Umno general assembly.

Then there was the desecration of the temple under the watch of the then Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo which did so much to outrage the Hindus throughout the country and turn them against the ruling coalition. And Dr Khir had the cheek to award a broom to a local council president, when neither he nor the party president could control the warlords who held the party to ransom over the choice of candidates, and stabbed the party in the back when they did not approve of the candidates.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is now paying for these and other acts of omission, including the undeliverable promises of change that he made when he first became prime minister in 2003.

Every other day, he has had to deflect attacks by party members and ex-leaders who conveniently have absolved themselves of any fault. But every day that he is sidetracked by party bickering is another day affairs of state are neglected — the nation and the people are the losers.

Abdullah has said that he has got the message; he has accepted responsibility for the unkept pledges; and this time, he vows he will deliver on his promises and set the country in order before he retires.

That is, in fact, the verdict of his mandate, and he should be allowed to get on with it. But all the worms crawling out of the Umno woodwork — especially the retired and those with shelf lives past due who have found new breath in their calls for a party coup — won’t let him.

They don’t get it. Abdullah is not solely to be blamed and everything will not suddenly be all well again if he goes. Umno from the roots to the high branches all have to share the blame for their silence, their greed, arrogance and shenanigans that have turned off voters. So stop the navel-gazing and infighting.

If they have to fight among themselves, at least have the decency to keep it civilised and behind closed doors. They don’t have to drag the whole country through their infernal politicking.

There are more important things than private peeves and settling of scores.

Neither the brewing crisis over soaring food prices nor other major issues are going to wait for Umno to put its own house in order. Now is the time for the grand old party to move on, do the things its leaders have promised and show that it still has what it takes to lead the nation. - NST

MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION, OK?

I DON'T GIVE AFLYING F**K TO WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE UMNO.

I ONLY WORRY THAT SAUDARA ANWAR IS MERELY BOASTING ABOUT BN DEFECTORS; THUS ALLOWING THE UMNO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO STRANGLE THE PAKATAN STATE GOVERNMENT!

SAUDARA ANWAR. I PRAY TO THE ALMIGHTY YOU TRULY HAVE THOSE BN DEFECTORS AT HAND. PLEASE DO NOT LIE TO YOUR SUPPORTERS AND THOSE WHO WOULD WANT TO END UMNOISM.

Yeah, Just get on with it. We can take another 5 years if we have to. And please take some time, while you are at it, to prepare a handover of the government to Pakatan in the next election.

The post election development within UMNO and some BN component parties merely confirms the idiotic characteristics of its' leaders who are selfish, greedy and corrupt, the guy who brandish the keris is no where to be seen and heard, doesn't he has the balls to come out and at least admit he was partly responsible for the recent electoral defeat of BN/UMNO. Betul-betul pondan. The situation obviously gets more messy with the sickening old guy still meddling in politics.

Well mixed into a writeup that would otherwise not have ever in the past made it to the press.

God makes things happen in strange ways. When you think you are about to give up and desperately losing hopes. There came a silver lining, and a glitter of hope at the end of the tunnel.

In retrospecs, by virtue of Tun's arrogance and thinking that he is above the Law and God, he chooses who he wished to take over the PMship. Fortunately, he had chosen the slumber king Bodohwi, weak in his leadership, but strong enough in character to rebel Tun's manupulation.

Never in his wildest dream Tun will think that BN would lost 5 states.
If Bodowi had been a strong leader, as authocratic and scheming as Tun, we would have been our life screwed for another 22years.
Even worst would be the PM-in-waiting Monkey Khairy would have consolidate his base supports, and run closer to achieving his wild dreams.

God seems indifferent, has enabled the arrogant, selfish and corrupted leaders created their demise. Without Bodohwi stupidity and inefficient leadership, ther will never be an opportunity for BN or UMNO to be destroy.

When credit and recognition is due, we have to give it to Encik Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Thank You!

Robin Goodfellow, you are right! Anwar has been harping about the defectors for some time now and up to this moment, not a single MP and I repeat, not one (satu) has defected. Every step begins with 'ONE' and it has not even begun! I hope he is not just all talk and nothing else. A lot of people are going to be very disappointed for sure after all the jubilant ranting and raving about forming the next government and predicting the demise of UMNO and Federal government.

The author has 1 thing right though... UMNO is still in charge and they need to get their acts together. Cuz Malaysia is still under BN and if they don't tackle those issues mentioned, all of us are in deep shit for the next 5 years or so!

I dun care a bit whether who's in power. The thing is, what Malaysians need is having at least 2 major political bodies who are dependable. So even if PR does become the next gov, corruption and the NEP will also be ard. So even if we hate BN for what it did all these years, the future will only be secure for us if BN changes and PR strengthens.

I wish to see not only a change in leadership in BN, but a major party overhaul involving purging corruption beginning from the top to bottom. Then, a renew political strategy that is more relevant to Malaysians. After all, no monopoly is a good thing for consumers. The same goes for a country.

Actually the leaders in UMNO are intellectually bankrupt and morally decrepit. They are stiill the governing party. All they have do is re-look at the policies, make changes and win back the lost ground. Any good and honest party would do that.

Here they are going for each other's blood. They want a change of leadership. Some are angry because theyw were dropped, No more income. Some are angry because they lost. No more income. Some are angry because no more income from pig farming. Some are angry because no more Penang Global city. And the list goes on.

Simple underlining problem. Loss of income. Do not want be honest and fair. Just want to line their pockets and in the process kill each other.

One more legacy of Tun ***** that has come back to haunt. Money politics. If there was no money in it, all these fighting would not take place.

NST is just playing it safe. What if PR really takes over the Federal Govt? Where would they stand? So its better to have 1 foot in BN and the other in PR. Kalimullah should be kicked out with the rest of the NST idiots playing politics rather than taking pride in their profession as journalists. Or the article is seen as some of the last desperate attempts by ABB cronies to forget that the nightmare at UMNO Street did happen and to get on with the work. Sweep everything under the carpet. The tsunami came and went and now the storm is coming.... and if the BN & Umno think the worst is over, think again..your nightmare has just begun. Its not just going go away and the change will be swift and clean. NST...you are a disgrace to journalism, we never believed a word you said and ur credibility as a newspaper is gone..

As a priority, "getting on with the job" means tackling threats to our financial system, public safety, food supply and environment. Not capturing more political power and public money.
The Father of Corridors has just given his blessings to a massive "tourist" development in PD, part of a long stretch of shoreline coated by a thick fertile layer of pig shit. What is the occupancy of the existing condos and hotels there? How can it improve when sewer pipes empty into the sea right in front of these buildings (as in Penang) and no one is held responsibile?

I may not like our PM, but I still believe that he is very gentleman to accept defeat. Unlike other PM who makes life miserably for those opposition leaders especially those states won by opposition parties.
According to Edge daily, Pak Lah told his CM and MB to hand over the power smoothly to opposition government without any untoward incidents in 4 states. This statement showed that at least our beloved PM is kind and just enough in this democratic country.
I think NST is right, the first priority is to get our beloved PM to clear the mess and move forward to correct any mistake in his administration especially like corruption, transparency in the system administration and etc. I think he should also correct the image of some UMNO leaders who are very arrogant in handling "Rakyat's" uneasiness and unhappiness.
To our beloved PM, it is good to have 2 party system in Malaysia. Each one is tried to show its administration is better than the other. More competition is good for this country.
Please work hard to take care of all Malaysian irrespective of race and religion. I think you can do it.
