Special Segment On TV For Bloggers Every Sunday PDF Print E-mail

(Bernama) KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 -- The Information Ministry will create a special segment on RTM's news bulletin every Sunday for bloggers to directly comment on issues.

Its minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the 20-minute programme, starting on April 20, would be broadcast on RTM1 as one of the segments of Warta Perdana, the prime news bulletin.

He said the special segment was created not just to provide an avenue for bloggers to voice their opinions on various issues, but also to prove the government's openness in dealing with the alternative media.

"As stated before, the ministry would be more open with the alternative media, so we decided to have this special slot for bloggers, to discuss current issues or issues they wish to raise.

"I believe this is a step forward which the people have been waiting for and welcome," he told a press conference at his office in Angkasapuri here Thursday.

Ahmad Shabery said the decision also showed that the government had always been confident of the people's mandate all this while, hence showing the strength of the government which needed not worry and hide its motives in whatever situation.

On the selection of bloggers to be interviewed, he said this would be determined by the RTM selection panel from time to time, depending on the issue to be discussed.

"We look at the issue, not the personality. Besides the well-known bloggers, we will also feature new ones. We leave it to RTM, this is not for the ministry to decide."

On the possibility of the guest commentators (bloggers) getting out of control or speaking with no restraint, he believed they would follow the rules of conduct set.

But the ministry's openness would indirectly encourage the bloggers interviewed to be more responsible with what they posted on the Internet, he said.

"This is a process of educating the public, that the government’s openness should be viewed positively. This is an avenue for them to convey their feelings and opinions in a courteous way. I am confident the bloggers will respect this openness."

Ahmad Shabery also announced the cabinet's decision to broadcast live the question-and-answer session in Parliament every day of the parliamentary sitting from April 30.

He said the matter was agreed upon by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz and the other cabinet ministers at their meeting on Wednesday.

"The 30-minute programme featuring the question-and-answer session will begin at 10am on each day of parliamentary sitting.

"We view the cabinet's willingness to allow the live broadcast as indicative of the government's increasing confidence, openness and transparency as promised to the people."

He said the programme would be aired by RTM1, while the Klasik Nasional radio channel would include interviews with parliamentarians, including from the opposition.

No no no, this man is getting it wrong.

Bloggers don't just exist in Malaysia for the sake of existing, but because other avenues of information are not Free.

It's not an issue of giving bloggers more prominence, it's an issue of freeing up the media in general.

cheers

Even if RTM is free and fair as its more so in the west doesn't mean blogging has less importance. Blogs in the Web 2.0 era means that surfers can home in on a particular issue anytime anywhere. Whereas the Sunday 20 minute program is a strictly fixed time. Thus it is a better idea if RTM has its own blog and cross post in here.

Well, it's a start and should be welcome. How else to go forward if not to take the 1st baby step. Airing of the parliament Q&A is also welcome, another step forward. I'm sure the viewing public is mature enough to evaluate the sincerity of the action when it does start. If the rating goes up, then air the debate sessions as well. Time for change and change we must. Who knows, maybe the bloggers can be cause for some more positive changes.

Why doesn't Ahmad Shabery Cheek focus on putting live debates between BN and PR politicians on live TV? I'd like to see Badawi take on Anwar or Lim Kit Siang in a battle of the wits.

what a joke? Why can't they just comment on the blogs itself? I think its a scam for the umno goons to defend themselves on the critics made against them. I agree with Stormquest.... have a life debate. but on the other hand, none of the umno rascals can talk logically.

This BN propanganda machine is SOOOOO predictable. It's like the so called Perak NGO (UMNO NGO) scenario. Some how they will show you a group of express or overnight bloggers as if they are the representative for the blogging community. Then, they will start to promote the negativity of the REAL internet bloggers and show the bad influences of blogging in the internet. Very typical tactics to brainwash and feed wrong info to those who don't know nuts about internet.

I don't know why, but Shabery's idea don't smell like roast chicken.

They should start their own blogs on government agendas and allow us to post our comments. Brainstorm on ideas popular among the bloggers and carry it out if it favors the citizen. Show us they are sincere about their promises. Talk, talk, and more talks is pissing us off. Have the Federal Government started walking their talk yet, huh???? When will these guys ever learn about the bread and butter issues that is close to our heart I wonder.

Hiyah, go talk till the sleepy old man stinks !!!

this bn fellas still don't know the basis of bloggers...seriously, they're barking at the wrong trees...it's not bloggers that bring you down, it's your own doing that created your own tsunami...gosh...really run out of breath to try to educate them...

also, if bloggers to appear on the national radio, are you guarantee the safety of the bloggers? is there immunity of speech? if we need to follow your guidelines, then why should we be there?

at the end, i think, only umno & bn's bloggers will be there. it will be just another pro-bn stance.

aaaahhhh... non sense!!!! they'll put those or 'plant' those bloggers who would only agree with them... giving the public a one sided picture... Please guys.... u know that they are insulting our intelligence... If they really want to do that, let them be the opposition first and them give them the opportunity to do so!!! Please don't be stupid to fall for this trap, I bet my life savings that they won't allow any criticism about 'their' politicians.... Watch what I say and read my lips.... So if those so called bloggers, (Umno Putras posing as bloggers) appear on TV are themselves getting paid to do so.... Don't say I didn't warn u 'genuine' bloggers aye.... smilies/sad.gif

Firstly, question why only 30mins? Who made this decision and if it is possible to air 30mins of the Q&A session, why cant the full sitting be aired. Well, there arent any interesting shows on RTM anyway.
I would think that BN goons will take this 30mins to act mature, put on a show and what not. PR will not be given a chance to squeek during this 30mins. They will then paint a picture that PR is doing nothing but keeping quiet when they are supposed to be representing the people who voted for them.
Next, why invite bloggers? Of course, they can invite bloggers who are pro BN and sing songs about BN and how great they are. Then those who are critical of BN, of course, ISA is always there to lock all the bloggers up. As RPK already kicked their ass in teaching them that the blogs are overseas thus it does not come under Malaysian jurisdiction, they can always lock the person up via ISA so the person can not continue to blog.
I would just give 2 middle fingers to this ******* who thinks that he can outsmart everyone else who are much smarter than him. Stupid people know that they are stupid while bloody idiots think that they are smart. I would rather bloggers continue to blog away and just throw the invitation to be on "The Corrupt Channel".

The Minister doesn't understand what it means by the word 'media'. TV is a media. Internet is another media. Why try to slowdown or kill a media for the livelihood of another media?

They have got it totally wrong. What they should do is to promote independent media! Let the opposition parties have their own tv channel, own radio, own newspapers, so as to promote diversity in media.

It's very clear to me their intention -- put a 15-20minutes 'blog-session' in between all the pro-BN news, bombard the people with all their ideology!

NO! WE DONT WANT 15-MINS A DAY BLOG SESSION! WE WANT AN INDEPENDENT MEDIA! BUT NICE TRY, ARSEHOLE! smilies/angry.gif

Is this good, is this bad?

From bloggers' point of view it's good that they can reach out to a larger audience, perhaps motivate more bloggers to come forward as they get national coverage. The bad is that tv may not be the best avenue to spread their message due to time and content restrictions. It also risk turning into a circus where presentation skills may end up overshadowing the issue. There's also the risk that the opinion of the few bloggers on tv may be construed as the opinion of the whole blogging community be it true or not.

From the government point of view it's good PR and also give them an opportunity to refute claims made by bloggers. The downside is that they risk getting a savvy blogger inserting sensitive questions which they may not like to discuss.

Overall, I think the benefits stack up to the government's advantage. The PR bit is probably the most important on top of the chance to refute bloggers which they can't seem to do very well on the bloggers' home turf. Bloggers as a whole may not get much benefits but individual bloggers may achieve celebrity status. Becoming a celebrity potentially means endorsements but the price is also costly because if celebrity bloggers screw up in their personal lives, bloggers as a whole may lose credibility not to mention bloggers who intentionally seek to become a celebrity would demean the blogging community.

So, tread with care and avoid sleeping with the enemy.

Otherwise, it is another step backward for RTM.

This appears to be another proposal from people with under utilised brains. It is a feeble attempt to find out why the people are not happy with the BN, as if they did'nt know already.

First of all, the BN cannot allow any major issues to be aired without moderation (read censorship),

Second, The scope limitations will not enable any fruitful dissusion to be developed,

Third, the programme will end up discussing minor (?) issues like why the price of teh tarik has gone up by 10 sen.

The programme will end up dicussing the best places to eat......have they forgotten that food bloggers exist too?

the rules of conduct set

Ha Ha Ha

I think I am going to have a good laugh reading all that.

One of the rules must definitely be that Anwar must not be mentioned at all or you would get dragged and bounced out. However, if you want to whack Anwar or ridicule him, they would be glad to provide you with any assistance you require, including providing film clips from their archives.

Seriously, I would not expect a very productive blogger's intercourse working with this bunch of sterile RTM people.

Pure waste of public's monies and time

This BS will be the platform for Umno cyber troopers.I doubt very much that there will be any of the revelations about Govt. mismanagement that we read here on MT.
It will just be an extension of the MSM and share all the same half baked views, and
is where we will most likely find the likes of Khir Toyol learning to read and write.

I have to agree that this is the present government propaganda. First blame the lost of the GE08 on alternative media and come up with some half baked scheme to have a 20 minute blog program on RTM. Who watches RTM these days? I can probably count with one hand the number of times I have watched RTM over the last 10 years. My concern is that the government will try to find a way to restrict the progress of the internet in Malaysia.

Hah - somebody wants to subvert the blogosphere now!

RTM - just clean up your act .... forget the "bloggers" program. Knowing you people, the ones who'll get the show, will be the pseudo-blogger politicians who have ghost writers to handle their "blogs".

The real bloggers will be used or bought out with "perks" to lend it credibility .... and you'd spit 'em out once you've discredited them with your propaganda!

unless the "real blog personalities" appear on this show, any "blogger" appearing would just seem to be a BN plant, and not worth my tv viewing airtime.

however its besides the point. they still don't get what blogs are. it's not just the original post, but the comments, views and BASHING&THRASHING that follows. it promotes discussion, thought and uncensored-honesty. internet is just a medium.

if they do want to go on with this show, it shoudn't be just for bloggers... it should be for any MALAYSIANS with a view, with something to say on any issue. hell... it could be the guy begging by the street (definitely no access to internet there!).
