Study shows why BN lost media war PDF Print E-mail

(New Straits Times) - Barisan Nasional's apathy towards the use of the Internet was a major contributor to its losses in the recent general election, a new study revealed.

Image

The study by Zentrum Future Studies Malaysia, conducted from Feb 20 to March 5 and involving 1,500 respondents aged between 21 and 50, showed that the alternative media had a big influence on voters.

Universiti Malaya Media Studies department senior lecturer Dr Abu Hassan Hasbullah said in the recent election, BN lost in the "information war" due to its misjudgment on the importance of the alternative media.

"Young people are relying more on these new alternative media rather than the conventional ones like newspapers and television," he said at a forum themed "Society and Media in the 2008 Election" yesterday.

In the study, 64.5 per cent of those aged from 21 to 30 years trusted blogs and online media for reliable information compared with 23.1 per cent who relied on the television and only 12.4 per cent on newspapers.

Of those between 31 and 40 years, 61.7 per cent believed that the information in the blogs and online media was true while 23.5 trusted the television and 14.8 per cent the newspapers.

But the older generation, those who are from 41 to 50 years old, seemed to trust the traditional media more than the new media.

"Realising how powerful the new media is, the opposition parties have used the opportunity since 1998 when the Internet started to penetrate the country.

"In the mid 2000, the opposition had more than 7,500 blogs and websites while the government had only three," said Abu Hassan who is also a researcher for the study.

Newspaper columnist Datuk Johan Jaafar felt there was a need to have a critical thinking to deal with these new modern media.

"This is a new influence that we need to carefully think of," he said.

I'm 49 years old and i prefer to be acknowledge as a wiser generation rather than an older generation. What say you, wise people out there? Our role has certainly open up a new dimension in this cyberspace world, newspapers are just keeping up with the obituary section. While we acknowledge the youths huge participation,i believe together with their foresight,we'll create a formidable stronger presence.

Even if they had embraced the alternative media earlier on, it wouldn't have made any difference. If they are unable to change themselves and their political rhetorics (bear in mind that change is the most difficult thing to bring about), then there is no reason how they can swing the voters in their direction. A media is there for dissemination and sharing of information, but what matters most is the content of the information. Just look at the MSM and you will see that their articles are mostly biased towards pro-BN and anti-Opposition. Do they think that by embracing the internet their message would be any different? Propaganda and patronising behaviour do not go down well with the intelligent and discerning populace.

RPK said: the bloggers don't create news. They merely transmit them and provide us with an alternative source. I don't care how many percent population believed in what, but the election results were due to 100% BN stupidity.

Even if BN had their own pre-election blogs, here's what they would have been like:

Kerismuddin: Get used to me showing my keris!
KJ: I've got no big positions in UMNO, i'm not even an MP, but i got a PM FIL, so all of you kow tow to me!
OKT: Lets build more chinese schools. Lets make sure chinese are protected. let's make sure we fight for our rights from the malays.
PM: i make promise to you to fight corrup... zzzzzz... *drool*.. what was i talking about? oh yeah fight corrup.... zzzzzzzzz.... night y'all. tata!
Menteri Penerangan: Itu ah... this ah... rallies ah... election... em, Malaysia, GOOD!
Info minister: today gas price drop 2 dollars. OOppps sorry MISinfo.
Rafidah Aziz: I support Mahathir only when he was PM. now ah, i support PM and dont want mahathir one, cause he attacked me. I always wear green cause I'm like grass ma, where the wind blows, that's where I bow.
Sami Vellu: Tol naik harga, you marah saya. You ingat highway itu saya punya ka?

so, there you go. if they had blogs, we would still realize that they are stupid ppl. in fact from BN's perspective, it was a good move that they DIDNT have blogs. otherwise they would have lost sabah sarawak also.

Poor BN and UMNO. Still talking about raced based issues, while the people see it as malaysian. Anwar is right, they can't live with the fact that opinions have changed and people have accepted the changes. TDM, Tengku R and others in UMNO are not the wisemen that they are used to be. Its the younger politician world. These younger people were living in their early years accustomed to the baised main media and later in half a decade thru the internet. These has shaped their mindset not to trust all medias but to read widely and form their opinions. They therefore can see the hypocrisy of BN government in the last 20 years raping and wasting the resources for socalled in the name of the people.

In the end content is king and the content is out of date for UMNO-BN. Could they have done better with blogs and internet? No doubt especially in making their case to urban Malays and MCA stalwarts but in the end, the opposition would have made major gains regardless without content change.

What a bunch of idiots who will never learn and blame the Internet so that they do not lose face!!!!

Look here;

i) Internet did not vote BR in nor did it vote BN out
ii) Most votes are rural people who are computer ILLITERATE
iii) Internet and blogs were around when in 2004 with 90% majority for BN
iv) people vote with emotions/feelings and not with logic / hearsay of the Internet
v) blogs are based on people's opinions and not that of Opposition
vi) blogs revealed facts, balanced arguements and non-biased opinions in discussions

so what changed;

i) BN UMNOPUTRAS bcame arrogant, careless and useless
ii)BN hurt people in ways they could not forgive
iii) BN thought dulu kini and selamanya applied forever and everywhere
iv) BN thought that peoples opinion did not matter
v) BN thought what it says is fact and that the world is flat and the sun revolves around the earth.

Face the facts and improved or be forever doomed ... like the DODO !!!!!

OH dear... another example of Malaysian academics stating what's bleeding obvious

Next thing they will be telling us that their in depth survey has come up with the finding that very few men can have babies

What they mostly failed to point out was that it was the message that was important... the media is of secondary importance

If there was no alternative message to be read there would have been no readers

"This is a new influence that we need to carefully think of," he said.

What a world shattering conclusion that is!!!

Commenting on the results of The Star-IIUM election survey published Sunday, he said the people did not depend entirely on blogs or the Internet for information.

Do these people, ie, the STAR editors, the Islamic Umiversity's staff, and the so called Information Minister then, knows what is the real meaning of SHAME ?

Zam as the misinformation chief is bungkus already. It's also time for that lousy University and STAR to close shop.

Do people still send their children to IIUM to be educated with lies and false information?
To churn out lying BN politicians probably.

Me and most of my friends and colleagues are in our mid to late forties. We are the first generation of IT trained folks. We have long used emails and the internet and now blackberry and so forth to our advantage, in our daily work and everyday lives. As such, I do not agree with the survey. They must be talking to the wrong people! We already lost confidence in MSM a long time ago.

I as blogger always on the fence, which mean always read two stream of media that is government stream and alternative stream. By doing so I able to identify which of the this stream a lie and not based on fact whether true fact or false fact or created fact.I as reader and blogger, alternative media was the most noble if compare to government stream media.

On R24, the talk always about their sense fear about alternative media. Their fear might come true if government media stream no longer can catch readers attention.

alternative media now control the media landscape in Malaysia. So bloggers unity we stand !!! smilies/grin.gif

Did the study further show why more of these people believe blogs rather than the MSM?

Look, the blogs are available to both sides. No issue there. Even then from the study 35% did not have trust in blogs. Why BN lost media war is not about them losing in the net but rather that they abused the MSM so much so that over 85% of the people polled did not have faith in them. This is the real problem why they lost.

So, even if you get BN en masse into the blogs it won't change much because BN would also pimp their own blogs making them untrustworthy. You can see Toyo and KJ with his website trying it out to make them look good. Forget it. Even LKS and Anwar used his blog to make him sound too good, they get negative feedback so now they're sticking to issues and leave self-promotion to a minimum. Goes to show that the net is welcoming, anyone can get into but it's a vicious world and if BN fail to grasp this they would still be like fish out of water on the net.

Information war is not about how much info you can churn out but rather how much of them are believable (not necessarily true).

Just think of it guys. If we did not have Malaysia-Today and Malaysiakini, would BN have won with a two-third majority? I would guess so.

Maybe Raja Petra was the general who won this battle for us and we were just the numbers that waved our keyboards and scared the shit out of those BeEnd-ers.

Doggone, we have MT in 2004. We had bloggers since Reformasi. Think about it. Blogs itself is part of the recipe but not the only reason.

The difference in 2008 is that there are people who would print out the info from the blogs and spread them around. Not just opposition party members, but people with no direct political ties with anyone. This shows that Msians are waking up to the need for political awareness. People are fed up that BN has been screwing them. add all together you get the said results.

"But the older generation, those who are from 41 to 50 years old, seemed to trust the traditional media more than the new media." I do not agree; I am 63 and I do not trust the MSM at all. I am into the net almost everyday and I search for reliable news and views all the time. I assure you that they do not come from the MSM. Why do you restrict your survey to 21-50 age group only? Most of my friends in the same age group of above 50 feel the same!

To teohchye - Neither do I. I am 62 and I was quite disgusted to read the Borneo Post (a Sarawak newspaper)in the run-up to the elections so I resorted to Malaysia Today. The Borneo Post was so blatantly a mouthpiece of BN that if I were the editor I would have found it utterly humiliating and embarrassing. The editor took its readers for fools, so to all you fools out there - stop buying the Borneo Post. smilies/angry.gif

BN did not lose the media war. There is no such thing as a media war. The PEOPLE got smarted and knew how o differentiate BN propaganda of lies and media manipulation vs Opposition champion for truth, honestly, eradication of corruption, and equality. BN does not need to do studies like this to know why they lost. They just cannot accept the hard truth... THE PEOPLE DONT WANT THEIR LIES, CORRUPTION and MANIPULATION anymore.

Umnoputras still haven't got over the shock of the March-8 bashing of the Barisan Nasional by her citizens and are still blaming everyone and everything including the media, blogs, internet & computers.
Why don't you point your fingers at yourselves just for once?
Or look into the mirrors to see the arrogance and corruptedness written al over your faces. That's the reason you lost the 2/3 majority and 5 states.
