FOOD BOYCOTT IN PENANG

In a continuing series on life in opposition states, Malaysia Correspondent Chow Kum Hor discovers how the flavour in Penang has changed since the March 8 elections. Penang is one of the five state legislatures that are now controlled by the opposition

PENANG - IN A state known for being a food heaven, many residents here are changing their gastronomic habits for political reasons.

This follows a widely circulating SMS asking Penangites to boycott nasi kandar, an Indian Muslim speciality popular among all races.

The snub is purportedly to punish Indian Muslims for taking part in a street protest on March 14 to demand that new Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng withdraw his plans to abolish an affirmative action programme which favours the Malays.

Most of the nearly 300 nasi kandar shops here are owned by Indian Muslims. One of Penang's best-known offerings, nasi kandar consists of steamed rice that is either plain or mildly flavoured, served with a variety of curries and side dishes like fried chicken, prawns, brinjal and bitter gourd.

One victim of the boycott is a restaurant along the famous seaside Gurney Drive. 'Look, normally during lunch-hour, it is packed. Now, there is not much of a crowd,' said staff member Mohamed Hanifa, 38, pointing to the many empty tables and chairs. None of the diners is Chinese.

'Business has dropped by about 30 per cent. The Chinese don't come here any more. I was told other bigger restaurants are worse hit,' he added.

The Chinese make up about 43 per cent of the state's population of 1.5 million and Mr Lim's decision to scrap the pro-Malay policy was well received by the community. The Malays comprise 41 per cent of the population.

The Democratic Action Party-led opposition swept to power in the March 8 general election, winning 29 of the 40 seats in the state legislature.

It was the first time the opposition wrested control of the state since 1969.

Mr Lim, who is also DAP's secretary-general, said the affirmative action programme 'breeds corruption, cronyism and systemic inefficiency'.

Several nasi kandar restaurant owners have said they did not join the illegal demonstration, although a sizeable number of Indian Muslims took part, as well as Malays.

Many in the Indian community see themselves as Malays, often conversing in Malay and practising Malay customs.

A spokesman for the anti-government Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) has called for a stop to the boycott.

Taxi driver Chong K.C., 63, is one of those staying away from nasi kandar restaurants. Despite his love for nasi kandar, 'to me, it is just a show of solidarity', he said of his boycott.

'It's a matter of time before I start frequenting my favourite nasi kandar shop again,' he added.

He is upbeat about the new government. He is particularly glad that the DAP-led government will be implementing an open-tender policy to curb corruption.

He admitted that he had voted for the opposition in the recent general election for the first time.

'I have always been a pro-government person. But the BN government had become too arrogant. They make sexist jokes in Parliament. That's why we need to teach them a lesson.'

While it is still too early to tell whether the new government will deliver on its promises, Mr Chong is hopeful. For now, he already has something to thank the new state government for: a waiver of parking-related offences.

The state's new administration has cancelled all summonses for parking-related offences and those involving hawker licences.

Mr Chong had two tickets, each carrying a fine of RM30 (S$13).

Meanwhile, information technology consultant Sivakumar Murugasu, 43, has ditched a plan to buy an apartment at the last minute although he had been wanting to buy it for some time.

'I do not know how property prices will move. I'll wait and see. Already, Guan Eng has decided to review the Penang Global City Centre,' said the father of three.

The Penang Global City Centre is a high-density development project with 40 blocks of high-rise towers comprising shopping malls, offices and apartments. Many Penangites oppose the project as it could worsen traffic congestion and cause pollution.

Mr Sivakumar is also worried that the federal government might slash grants to the state now that it is under opposition rule. He said this could hamper growth in the state.

Penang is home to multinationals such as Dell, Intel and Motorola, but is fast losing its shine as an industrial heartland of Malaysia.

Restaurant cook Esah Shukor, 42, shares Mr Sivakumar's concerns but has no regrets about supporting the opposition. She said many Malays were also marginalised under BN rule.

'Only those with political links stood to gain while the vast majority of Malays did not benefit,' she said.

For retiree Khoo Soo San, 63, the change in government could well reunite her with her family. The widow has been living with her sister in Prai, on the mainland, for more than 10 years after her children left for New Zealand to work.

The mother of two said her sons, an accountant and an architect, had sent her e-mail asking about the state government's plans to woo back Penangites working overseas.

Madam Khoo said her children were drawn by the DAP's pledge to remove the affirmative action programme and introduce transparency.

'I told them it is great if they come back to be with me. But they want to find out more first. For now, things look promising,' she said. - THE STRAITS TIMES

Since most of the Nasi Kandar business is operated by Mamak or Indian Muslims and since the BN media had blamed the Mamak for staging the KOMTAR protest, the public had felt that by boycotting them will teach them a lesson.

Malaysians need to realise that we need to live in peace and harmony among one another so that our country will progress. We should never be influenced by any political situation.

I suggest that "Mamak nasi kandar " store have to review it price of foods, some time it was too expensive. However, to gain back the business, I advice them to place " We votes to Change " and please no more plan for the cony business where a lot of them are used to.
Appreciating the human talents are also mostly concerned, because of the Bad policy, it cause alot of local investor, local talented resources has jump out from Penang, Perak, Kedah to oversea as "Outsider" but there are comfortable with the appreciations that has granted to them.
I urged that, please dont based on quota to distribute the works contributions based on the talents instead, as it will strip down the talented contributions to our country. Train and educates the less talented become "man of worth".

Ask the Mamak restuarants owners to sent the bills to Mamak Musa at Asenia Property Developers , Bukit Mertajam . He is one of the leaders and organiser in the Komtar demonstration and his name is Senator Musa Syed Fadzir , UMNO BM chairman. For your information he and Abdul Aziz Syed Fadzir the one who threaten to burn the Selangor Chinese Assembly Halls are BROTHERS . Together these two brothers are the owners Fadason Kia Sdn Bhd , Asenia Developers Sdn Bhd at Bandar Perda , Bukit Mertajam and Bandar Mutiara at Simpang Empat , Seberang Prai Selatan . Please boycott their companies . To these two Mamaks and the UMNOPUTRAS who demonstrated I mau tanya 'Ini Bukan Kebudayaan Melayu ' quote unquote by SIL and FIL , so ini lah kebudayaan siapa ? Penang Island istself never really had any real Malays.Historically it saw the immigaration of Arabs Tamil Muslims,Burmese Muslims,Acehnese,Armenians and yes even Jews not to mention the Chinese and Indians as we identify them now.The term Mamak should although not politically correct should rightfully refer to the Peranakan Malays who are of Indian ancestry(people with names like Merican). These people speak patois Malay which is peppered with Tamil words and overthe years have become a Malay subculture and therefore must be considered Malay and Mamak. The majority of the Indian Muslims in Penang cleverly jump into this bandwagon and try to hoodwink others into thinking that they are Mamaks only to shamelessly seek the benefits of the NEP.

The nasi kandar operators are more Indian than other Indians in Malaysia.Often they have close connections with their families (often half sibblings) in India. Some of them are not even Malaysian citizens. They speak Tamil in private but publicly claim to be Malays. Many were and continue to be in the cabinet representing Umno.On what basis do they claim to be Malays and by extension claim to be marginalised in Penang is a wonder to me.Malaysians are an ignorant lot to be hoodwinked by these so called Mamaks.Nor Mohamad Yackob should have represented the MIC in the Cabinet being a Tenkasi Tamil.

I have no problems with Malaysians claiming to be Indians ,Malays ,Chinese or even Eskimos but when the racial classifications is linked to special privileges then it is only right to expose those making a mockery of the NEP.Social engineering can be useful in correcting imbalances. If the Malay and Bumiputera have had a raw deal then they must be helped to be on par with he rest. The Indian muslims seem to be the only ones laughing all the way to the bank and they have absoloutely no business masquerading as Malays. They have to be exposed!

True. When the British arrived in 1786 it was empty save a few fishing stopover points for the Kedah fishermen. The Britsh brought Indian masons starting that year, and soon chinese traders arrived and set up shop. Later, in the 1800s till 1881 runaway malay slaves from Perak and Kedah made Penang their home and many married with Indian muslims. Malay slaver ywas abolished in 1881. The decendants of ex-slaves are the Penang malays today.

The nasi kandar Mamak are also rather arrogant. I seriously suggest nasi kandar mamaks approach the Mamaks in power e.g. Reezal (KJ's friend), Azeez, Zammm (oh, sorry, he's out!) for help with their problem of slow-down in business.

All this because of the stupid NEP which was abused by Mahathir mamak.....

it's not right to apply a blanket action against all the Indian Muslim. we are talking about allowing the freedom of expression but if we start to boycott nasi kandar just because of there are some people from the community do not agree with the state government, then we are no better than bn or for the matter pap of singapore.

would u sue us, if we are against the policy of the state or would u boycott malaysia today if rpk was among the demonstrators against penang state government?

if people are so blinded by leaders or party that they support & they boycott the Indian Muslim just because some of them involve in the demonstration, then these people should also ask the state government to kick out malik kassim, exco member (SA for batu maung)in penang because he is a pure Indian Muslim.

I personally have boycotted mamak stalls when I was in the uni days. Practically, nothing to do with politics. It is just that they are too arrogant and charging their customers exhorbitantly expensive! They practice "double standards" in charging their customers depending on the colour of your skin (yes... not all of them but most of them are racist!) The last time that I frequented them was when I found out that some fella in front of me (with the same food and portion) and I was charged relatively a lot more expensive than the fella. I asked the mamak at the counter why mine was a lot more expensive and he just said my portion was bigger. Anyone with the same experience here?!

Last time when Malaysian Goverment want's to implement one education system, the chinese are the ones jumping heywire. Now I saw some jerk have written above talking on Bangsa Malaysia. Similiarly the Indian want's to keep their Tamil schools.

As for mamak's case in Penang. These are different case. "It is the karma of mamak's that they have become kurma in Malaysia". Moinuddeen Chisty wrote in Malaysia today.

Why talk about Zam, Nor Muhammad and so on. Lets look at people like Tan Sri Ninam shah, Tan Sri Syed Muktar Al-Bukri, TDM, DSAI,Munshi Abdullah, Tan Sri Elias Omar, former lord presidents and so on. These people are from Mamak origins and they have become Malaynese in their own era but have contributed immensely to Malays society.

Excuse me, when we suggested the boycott against the Mamak nasi kandar restaurants, we DIDN"T suggest boycott ALL Mamak business outlets. Why only restaurants? Most of the mamak fellas are staunch UMNO/BN supporters. During the reformasi days mamaks took side with their chief TDM. Mamaks consider themselves more Malays than the Malays themselves. Teaching them a lesson is good but sometimes a blanket boycott is unfair to those who are not involved. Those who took part in the demonstration at KOMTAR were lured in by UMNO. The state UMNO big guns were there. May be the mamaks were onlookers.

Let's forgive and forget the issue. It will effect the economy it the boycott goes on. I think they have learned the lesson well.

The mamaks are known as double headed snakes. In the past, with the Tamils they speak passionately of their common language Tamil and condemns the Malays and with the Malays they speak about their common religion Islam and condemns the Tamil Hindus. The mamaks are not worthy of any trust at all. They know that the Hindus Tamil don't trust them and hence the present generation of Mamaks have shamefully ignored and forgotten their ancestors rich culture and language and joint the Malays in the hope of being recognised as Malays and getting the priviliges of Bumiputera. Looking at the prosperous Chinese they may also claim that they are now half chinese. This kind of creatures cannot be trusted at all.

GUYS!!!

I've given the past weeks' events some thought, and I must now ask everybody to CALL OFF THE ANTI-MAMAK BOYCOTTS. Here's why:

1) Why did you think the mainstream media highlighted the fact that the mamaks were involved too? They want to drive a WEDGE betw us and the mamaks, thereby driving them into Umno's fold. This is EXACTLY the result they're hoping for!

2) If we had truly voted for a truly "Malaysian Malaysia", let's stop reacting accordingly to Umno/MCA incitements. We'd be playing into their hands, and undermining the very ideal we want Malaysians to be educated about for all future Elections.

3) There were only 1,000 ppl in that demo, including many full Malays too. To punish the ENTIRE Mamak community for this is actually Collective Punishment, which Umno itself has threatened Opposition States with for voting them out. If we also indulge in this kind of behaviour, how can we then point fingers at Umno if they pull this kind of politics on us in the near future?

4) I think the message has already sunk into the Mamak community's head lah. No need to prolong this divisive tit-for-tat syndrome any further. The best way to win people over to our side is by Compassion, not hatred.

There will be a lot more fighting, backstabbing and hatred coming to our political scene over the next 3-5 years. Let's focus our energies against our REAL enemy: Racism and Corruption in Government ala BN.

This is my two sen's worth. Thanks for listening.

I would say that its better to rephrase the word mamak with "UMNO MAMAKS". I would like to say this because , its not all the mamaks are as what some say.As an ex-penangite,i had many mamak family friends who are not as described here.

Lets not keep whacking them for the mischief of some. If it took people 50 years to change the mindset in electing people, why not give some more time to these UMNO MAMAKS to change their mindset. Just a different perspective.

I would like to say that, there are these type of people in all the community, its not right to blame the whole community for the mistake of some.

Keep the nasi kander boybott.. no for political reasons.. but for 1) Humanity... launch a employee care investigations to each Nasi Kandar shop, check the foreign employees pass, and living conditions, and ensure that they are getting paid. (2) better value for money.. the prices are a joke, and you are all idiots throwing your hard earn money so that they can live like kings. Be selective and support only the honest ones who does 1 & 2 proper.

I am not surprised that the mamaks took to the streets. I have always maintained that, to prove their loyalty to the Malay race, and to prove that they are more Malay than the Malays, they will be amongst the first to use race as an issue. I would not be surprised that they will be amongst the first to start a violent demonstration in the same light.

This will be a good chance that their call to be called Malays will be favourably considered by UMNO.

Of course, the police will just stand idly by. No ISA arrests will be made. You can bet your bottom ringgit on that. For all you know, it is UMNO who is organising such demonstrations.

Red Door, I had the same experience as you did. Being overcharged as I suspected cos I'm Chinese. Mamak shops (nasi kandar) food not even tasty. I boycott them permanently. BTW, years ago, I was told, a lot of these mamak shop owners are actually multi-millionaires!

My dear friends. It is really sad that we are actually discussing this disgusting issue of race when in the light of recent events we should start looking beyond race. However as I have mentioned above one cannot sweep it under the carpet because in this twisted country race determines everything, therefore however nauseating it may be ,we need to discuss this and put certain things on record.

First of all, stop labelling people mamak or Indian or whatever only on the basis of ancestry.Let me explain this.People like Dr Mahathir or Anwar Ibrahim may have Indian blood in them but my no means can the be called Indians.Dr M's father ,a Malabar muslim from India married a Malay and lived in a kampung.Mahathir was brought up a Malay during a time when it was unfashionable to be a Malay.Mahathir grew up as a Malay ,thought as a Malay and certainly was passionate about the Malay cause. He was never a hypocrite. In any case dont forget the constituition says if either parent is a Malay ,then the child is Malay .In my mind he is 110% Malay.Similiarly Anwar Ibrahim may have Tamil Brahmin blood on the paternal side but culturally he was brought up as a Malay and his first words were probably "Abah" and "Emak".Race cannot be should not be determined genetically but culturally ie the culture one identifies with.So once and for all ,please stop this silly labelling of people like Mahathir or Anwar being Indians.

On the other hand you have countless hypocrites from Penang and other places who are culturally Tamil or Malabari ,with no intermiggling with Malays .Privately they speak Tamil ( and usually with a very good command of the language) or Malayalam. They detest sambal petai and probably would not know what "sudah jatuh di timpa tangga" means. These parasites identify themselves as Malays only to "cari makan".There are enough of them and some holding very high positions in this country. My issue is the NEP was meant for Malays and Bumiputeras, not Indian Muslims. If the Malays want to embrace the Tamil or Malabar muslim as their own ,it is upto them ,but dont insult the intelligence of the other bumiputeras like Sarawakians and Sabahans. Most of our "towering Malays" prefer thosai to nasi lemak labu!

Gujaratis could be Muslims too. I'd a Gujarati friend who was a Muslim, and a VERY clever one - he won the Nehru Prize (1st or 2nd) for Science many decades ago. A very good man and wonderful friend. Here he might be called a "mamak" but in the states he's known as an Indian or Indian Muslim. So - we can't generalize people.

Hey Guys,

Just a suggestion,

Since the heat is on Nasi Kandar at Penang....why not transfer someof the heat to klang valley.

You know the prices at Lotus and others especially PJ area is unjustifiably exorbitant....

Can save some money and take family out for a movie....

Your views please...?

Nothing wrong with boycotting. It is just a reminder to business owners that Malaysian is no longer afraid of BN and businessmen shouldn't take side anymore in politic. If you give RM$ 1 to BN make sure you donate the same amount to RM$1 to BR.

Life is not fair but you make a decision or someone representing you did it for you and you are paying for it. You are a businessmen maybe put a PKR or DAP flag at your restaurant and maybe your business will be better. So be smart/creative not cry babies like your UMNO buddies....

I would like to remind everyone here. We have fought the UMNO/BN corrupts with multiracial identities in the GE. Fine and good, we manage to deny 1/3 of BN victory.

And now, we are back into square box again, talking on races and religion issues. Let those who want's to follow UMNO aka UMNO putra and so on. Let them alone with their interneal problems. They have Mamak, Chinese and Indian's in UMNO now a days. Even PAS have Indian and Chinese with them.

Even the Chinese refuse and dissagree with singular schools during TDM era. What can we say on them? Hypocrite!!!!, Selfish!!!!, Ashole!!!!. ah.... all same. I know most of the blooger here is Chinese.

Everybody is same......

I can't blame the non-Malays for being angry at the mamaks who demonstrated at Komtar. Did the non-Malays demonstrated anywhere else against the unfairness of the NEP or the "ketuanan", or even the discrimination they have to put up with all these decades. They took it quietly and survived.

Now a new non-UMNO government has been voted into power, and here we have people protesting! Be a sport. Accept the decision in good faith. And support the choice of the majority. For the information of the mamaks and those who voted for UMNO/BN, the BR was voted into power with the support of the Malays, Chinese, Indians, and others. The Chinese vote alone would not have put the BR into power. And not all Chinese voted for BR, mind you. Many voted for the BN and UMNO.

And its not that the new Government is against the Malays or discriminates against the Malays. They are talking of being fair to ALL races and being transparent. Good grief, can anyone in his right mind be against this!!

To the BN/UMNO members, please accept and respect the choice of the majority of the people(of all races). It is still early days, and already you are protesting. Can you see how stupid and idiotic you have become. In fact, the Penang Malays even protested against Gerakan's Koh Tsu Khoon, accusing him of marginalising them. What do the mamak's really want? To be called real Malays and bumiputeras, is it? Then bring your demands to UMNO, and don't make a fool of yourselves by demonstrating against the new Government.

three confirmed mamaks were on board the last cabinet, nor, zam and shahrizat including small time mamak in putra UMNO

now lets analyse the situation, 3 mamaks sneaked into cabinet via manipulation of "bumiputera" qouta. Now how many mamaks in the country that this sizeable qouta is given to them.

no wonder even the Bidayuh are asking for seats in BN cabinet,

hey next can we also have a Rigardo from Malacca asking his rightful place ........

Having to pay an extra few cents for food at road-side nasi-lemak stalls or at nasi-kandar shops just because of your skin colour is so very common and happens often too. But to be asked to pay through your nose... it only happens at Mamak nasi-kandar restaurants.
Some years ago, I took a few friends to have nasi-kandar dinner at a restaurant near the Komtar area in Penang. We ordered the usual fare plus some sotong (squid) and some medium-size tiger prawns. We were quite careful so we asked for the price of the items before eating.
The smiling Mamak in his friendly manner assured us:- "Everything in this shop is cheap, sotong only satu-lapan, udang only satu-enam. Tapa, makan dulu, makan dulu, belakang kira"
Everyone agreed the price was reasonable:- sotong one-eighty and prawn one-sixty. But it was only after the bill was presented that that we almost fainted, and swore we will never eat at that restaurant again, ever. We were charged 8 ringgit for a sotong and 6 ringgit for a tiger prawn.
