In shift, Malaysia reaches out to bloggers PDF Print E-mail

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia's government has said it will reach out to bloggers, dropping threats of arrest in a major change of policy triggered by a shock election loss that has raised calls for reform.

The nation's mainstream media is mostly part-owned by parties in the ruling coalition, and what was seen as biased coverage in the run-up to last month's vote has boosted demand for alternative news sources including blogs.

After being hit with the worst results in its half-century history, including the loss of its two-thirds parliamentary majority, the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition now says it wants to listen to dissenting voices.

Newly appointed Information Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said he is keen to meet bloggers.

"I am trying to build a bridge between the government and the people so that we can have a two-way dialogue -- and bloggers are a key part of this," he told AFP.

"I am planning on meeting them soon," he said.

But prominent bloggers have questioned the commitment of the government, which until recently had accused them of spreading lies and threatened severe punishment including detentions without trial.

"We welcome the government's move to engage bloggers but we are not in any hurry to meet them," said National Alliance of Bloggers president Ahiruddin Attan.

Ahiruddin, who met with Ahmad Shabery on Friday, said the offer of talks with bloggers needed to reflect the political will of the government.

"The success of the talks will depend on what kind of mandate he has from the cabinet," he said of Cheek's proposal.

"He is going to be acting against the popular stand of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that bloggers are a nuisance."

Media analyst and blogger Nuraina Samad said bloggers have changed the face of Malaysian politics, becoming a vocal group that the government has to deal with.

"Many bloggers who turned to opposition politics before the last elections won the seats they contested," she told AFP.

"You look at the issues people were talking about before and during the elections -- many of them were raised by bloggers, and you did not see them raised even once in the mainstream media," she said.

"Despite this, the points raised became major issues among the people during the election campaign, with the government parties forced to address these issues that had been blacked out in their media."

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders ranks Malaysia 124 out of 169 on its worldwide press freedom index.

It says that the mainstream media are "often compelled to ignore or to play down the many events organised by the opposition."

They believed so much in their own spin that when they tried to reach out to the voters, they were confronted by a lot of issues that themselves were not aware of and could not handle.

Thank God for the internet.

Hmmm...I dun trust these Barang Naik morons. They enticed you to meet (setting their fishing gears in place), then they sweet talk you to register a group (casting their net), then they filter out into 2 groups - pro BN and anti BN (tagging), then the Internal Ministry will swoop the anti-BN tags under the ISA.

Then the public will protest to this Ahmad Shabery...he will give you the BN signature answer, this is under the purview of the Home Affairs and I don't know. (They are pro at kicking the ball around lah).

So DON'T FALL INTO THE TRAP!

Let's get something right here. The bloggers are merely saying what's true. They are not anti-government. They are only anti-government when the government becomes dirty, racial, corrupted and full of cronyism and nepotism. The BN Govt has controlled all traditional media thus far. Are they now also to want to control the bloggers too?

If the BN Government wants the bloggers to write good things about them, they should then have good things for bloggers to write about in the first place. I see it as an attempt to 'contain' these bloggers through various means including perhaps even threats to briberies eventually.

BTW, bloggers, don't forget how you were treated last time. Trusting the untrusted will mean trouble for all bloggers. Don't teach them how to blog too. Those stupid UMNO and BN bloggers did make a weak attempt to blog but failed due to low hits. Keep it that way bros!

BN relenting? Don't be fooled. BN cannot be sincere if does not reform the mainstream media. This is just an attempt to neutralise bloggers. Do not be fooled.

Let them wait after all the bloggers were non-entities in BN's eyes.
Don't sell out the bloggers who rightly took over the role of the fourth estate when the MSM abdicated their status by churning out sewage that insulted our intelligence day-in-day out. BN has deep pockets.

There are more important issues which the info minister should be looking into. First and foremost, he should demand that the two main-stream newspaper, namely Star and NST, to improve, and if necessary, issue warning to them to be fair.
At the same time, TV broadcasting should be up-graded to include more English and Chinese programmes.
Leave the bloggers alone to contribute constructively.

There is no real reason to meet the bloggers except that it is a ruse to pacify them, especially with all sorts of internal problems that BN is facing now. Worse, it is an opportunity to tag and scrutinise them, and even issue threats when the time is right.

What matters is for the government to fix the issue of reliable-information-deficit in mainstream media. The new minister would best spend his time by turning RTM into a BBC, and enact laws to regulate an independent media commission, and do away with printing presses and publications act. He should emulate Zaid Ibrahim by having a 6 month deadline.

The new minister should also look into severing ties between political parties and media outlets, and subject them to shared equity holdings instead of concentrated shareholding by one individual, so that no single shareholder holds absolute influence over who helms the editor's position.

why he keeps insisting he wants to meet bloggers and see what's on blogger's mind?

Just read the damn blogs....

If you want two way communications, post your blogs and comments, and the bloggers will reply. Note that in cyber world, reply and comments may not be so appealing in the ISA- BN controlled environment...

Blogs are not all true in all form. Some may be speculative, some rumours, some insider information, etc....but bloggers are mature enough the evaluate what is served up the plate, unlike the mainstream media who spoon feed the public with what they choose the public to hear.

Shabery,
Looks like the Govt is desperate and are trying to woo the people they made fun of and called names, while shoving the kris into the air .....
You wanna "engage" but don't wish to be questioned.
You talk a lot but say nothing - that's communication and information for you!
Meanwhile, you do nothing to address the lies UMNOputras told about bloggers in general!
Why don't you engage Azalina who waged war on bloggers, and make a public apology first!
You could also return the PCs seized over a nonsensical police reports - that might help your image ....
