PETALING JAYA (March 21,2008): The horse-trading and apparent bickering among the political parties who will make up the new Selangor government are cause for concern for the Sultan.

While he has to remain apolitical, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has, over the last two weeks, found himself having to play arbitrator to the coalition of PKR, DAP and PAS in resolving the executive council line-up as well as the position of deputy mentri besar.

It is a difficult task for the ruler, as while giving advice, he cannot be seen to be interferring.

“Tuanku is worried about the state of affairs of the state and wants the matter to be resolved soon. His primary and only concern is that of the rakyat. They should be served and not be affected by any internal conflicts among the political parties,” a palace aide said on Thursday.

The swearing-in of the executive councillors has yet to take place as the loose coalition making up Barisan Rakyat is still haggling over who gets what, and how many.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is expected to present the final list by today, with the swearing-in to be held on Monday.

The aide stressed that while the Sultan remains apolitical, it is the ruler’s right to express concern or apprehension and offer suggestions.

“That does not mean they (the political parties) have to take the advice,” he said, referring to a newspaper report on Thursday that seemed to indicate that the Sultan had insisted that the 10-man exco line-up should have a Malay majority.

“The suggestion of six Malays and four non-Malays in the exco was not Tuanku’s suggestion but that of Tan Sri Khalid,” said the aide.

He said a 5-5 formula was bandied around during the discussion, but Sultan Sharafuddin reminded Khalid that should there be a deadlock, the mentri besar has the deciding vote.

He said it was the ruler’s opinion that the exco line-up should represent the demographics of the electorate.

“Tuanku will never titah (decree). He will advise. That’s all,” said the aide.

“Tuanku wants them to work as one and not as separate teams inside the coalition. He doesn’t want them to work as three individual groups. That will be detrimental to the welfare of the state and the rakyat,” the aide said, explaining why the Sultan wanted letters from the PKR, DAP and PAS leadership and assemblymen, agreeing to the exco line-up to avoid conflicts.

He added that the ruler also advised the leaders of the political parties that there is nothing stopping PKR from proposing a Chinese or Indian candidate, if it feels that these communities are under-represented.

It is believed that the final list will take on a 4-3-3 formula to PKR, DAP and PAS respectively.

A PAS candidate is expected to take on the role of speaker, and the post of deputy speaker goes to DAP.

Meanwhile, the fixation of the DAP on the deputy mentri besar’s post is also a point of contention for the Ruler as he feels the focus should be on the exco line-up.

“The deputy mentri besar does not have executive powers. He can’t even chair exco meetings unless he is an exco himself. An exco’s role is more important as it carries executive powers,” the aide said. - THE SUN

The dmb does not have executive powers, so why the heck is Dap so bullheaded about the position? Especially nominating Chinese (which is not the tradition) and worst of all a woman, which is unthinkable! Get on with it! You are elected to attend to people's needs not your own.

Come on, whether you are BN or BR I don't give a damn. It is high time this how many chinese and how many indian and how many melayu mentality stops. Fullstop.

I was born in 1962. Ever since I know how to read and write, I have been hearing this I China, you Melayu and dia India. I am sick of it.

For once, look at what are the component parties who won in terms of seats and do the arithmatic based on percentage composition and leave it to the individual component party to pick their number. It's simple arithmatic.

If you guys cannot put your act together, then by next election then let us cross some other party.

I wait for the day when our leaders will stop talking about how many malays and/or non-Malay. I will thank God when a malay will represent indian interest, a chinese to rep malay interest and an indian to rep the chinese interest and so on. That will be the day when our Malaysian race will start becoming a reality. Understand it will be too premature but hope our new leaders are conscious of it and start working towards it or making a start. Hope they do not preach something and start practising something else or the same thing. Also do not do things just for the sake of doing it or pleasing people but rather with a genuine and sincere intention of doing good for the rakyat.

I think it is high time we stop talking about how many Indians, Malays, or Chinese are in the exco, etc., and the Sultan as Monarch of the State should show a good example here, along with the MB, Tan Sri Khalid.

Perhaps, HRH has too much investments made through Jojo (who has recently bought a 18 seater Citation private jet!!) in too many GLCs, and ULCs, and may tend to lean towards the BN Govt.'s interest.

Looking at the reactions of the people who have commented here, it seems to be starting to work.

The Royalty is not without its stains in the years gone by with Sultans and their families, beating up RAKYAT, like the Hockey coach and killing golf caddies with golf clubs, to name a few atrocities committed. Best that they remember that they are here at the RAKYAT's pleasure and behave accordingly.

Let us not fall victim to such brutal acts by the Roaylty and their family members any more. We, the RAKYAT will decide how to rule and who to rule, not the Royalty.

Support BARISAN RAKYAT !!

Hey! Why suddenly the race quota comes in again - even at the selection of councillors? I thought we voted the BR because we are moving towards a meritocratic system? Why must those who won more get less in order to "fill the quota"? Is it rational to decide that, while the other races have been served by mostly malay councillors quietly all these time, it is not possible for non-malay councillors to serve malays? I do not have the whole story yet, but sure smells like the "ketuanan melayu" thingy flooting up again - unfortunately, this time it is on the BR camp. If this happens to be really the case (I hope not), DAP might as well fold up if they don't resist.

I hope that PKR and PAS better don't give the wrong signal or else they may lose the trust of those who thought they genuine support non-racism. I also do not think the DAP should be made the fall guy again and painted as uncompromising and racist when it is clearly the other way round if the demand on councillor-quota is true. Com'on all BR leaders (in particular PRK & PAS this time ), show us you can act on your principles!

What I see in this newly formed coalition of PKR-PAS-DAP is that they do not have a legal and elected leader.

Each party still do not look at the reality of the situation. Why can't these 3 parties look at the following issues before they start to show as if they are power greedy:

1. Do they know that they won their seat time time not because of their party ideology but mainly due the the BA/BR issues?

2. Do they know that the rayaat that they are to lead only 1/2 to 2/3 is supporting them?

3. Do they realized that the ratio of the race ethics are some thing like 55:30:10:5?

4. Do they know that the ratio of the religious faith of the is also similar?

5. Do they read the the state and the federal constitutions from cover to cover?

PKR,PAS and DAP, top leaderships should not wasting time in fighting over exco and Deputy MB posts etc etc... This will create unhealthy frictions from leaders downline to the grassroots.

PKR,PAS,and DAP top leadership must (maybe they have)sit down, draft and register a legal new coalition party with a new logo. Have a immediate general assemble, elect your leader and exco of the new coalition. Then all decision should be made by this new coalition exco.

Please!! Be professional and do show to the rakyat that you are not just like a bunch of sport club committees or residential committee. If you are more interested in holding post your no different like crabs in a basket... no one goes to the top because the others will pull u down.

What the Rakyat want to see now, is how can 3 of you work together holistically with a single collective agreement on policies and leadership. We have 5 captains on board of the 5 ships that were taken over but the other chief mates all wanted to be the first and second mates... remember, not all the crews and passengers are yours... don't let them cut your guts and throw you into the ocean for good.

PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME AND PLACE USING THE RIGHT PEOPLE AT THE FIRST TIME DOING IT. ... if not there might not be a second chance for the second time.

People, at this point of the BR struggle, the DPM position is very symbolic in showing the principle of fairness and the willingness to share power in governance among the races. That's why in Penang, the DAP-dominated state government immediatly appoints two other races-reps as DPM. I don't think DAP even consider it an issue of compromising its position, rather it is the only rational thing to do if the 'unity of purpose' of the BR component parties is to be shown to the rakyat. With PAS and PKR clearly has the advantage of the Sultan's subtly delivered preference, it is time we see what they really stand for when it counts. The rakyat is waiting!

All of us should sit back, cool down and think wisely before passing judgment. Don't forget its the MSM who is reporting this supposedly infighting. You really have to discount what they have to report. Just because there's a delay, we assume that there is problem. Planning takes time and consultation. Why not delay if the composition is not right? Better get it right the first time around rather than having to re-work, re-work and re-work.

With all the nonsense the MSM cook up these days, i don't even know if thE content of this article holds true. But if it does, its disappointing because even the Sultan still talks Malay and non-Malay rather than Malaysian and non-Malaysia. The people have spoken. We want Malaysia for Malaysians. If the leader of this coalition still think, by compromising, you lose support and confidence of your supporters, you are no different from BN's analysis on peoples needs. Remember, the majority didn't choose BR, they chose to reject BN. People just want change. So form your government quickly and start the changes...NOW!

If the article is true, I am not surprise at all. Recent events have shown even some renowned thinkers started screaming "racist, anti Islam and so forth".
Ketuanan Melayu ala NEP is like drug. It's very hard to just go turkey. Like a smoker, they'll always say, just another one, last one.

Let's see how many have actually managed to totally rehabilited themselves of NEP. I think I have found one. see this article by Farouk, which was probably not widely published

This episode is echoing our annual event of witnessing super-students from the Chinese and Indians denied a place in local universities despite their performance. Sickening racism.

sultan, from our analysis and observation. could you answer from your heart that you are impartial as to who takes over the govt? were you benefited much (don't know through what source) and now you feel that you no longer can be benefited as the new govt will be different from the previous administration? i also have 1 very sensitive questions "IF the Sultan selangor is proven guilty of involved in corruption , colluding with the former administration, will the sultan be protected due to his position or every one is equal , get charged?"
