Along the way, however, something happened. And this something happened in November 2007. On 10 November, the Malays and Chinese got together under BERSIH to fight for clean and fair elections. Then, two weeks later, the Indians united under HINDRAF to protest the raw deal they had been getting over 50 years since Merdeka.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Ever since the break up of the Roman empire one of the constant facts of political life in Europe has been the emergence of independent nations. They have come into existence over the centuries in different forms, different kinds of government, but all have been inspired by a deep, keen feeling of nationalism, which has grown as the nations have grown.

In the twentieth century, and especially since the end of the war, the processes which gave birth to the nation states of Europe have been repeated all over the world. We have seen the awakening of national consciousness in peoples who have for centuries lived in dependence upon some other power. Fifteen years ago this movement spread through Asia. Many countries there, of different races and civilisations, pressed their claim to an independent national life.

The wind of change is blowing through this continent, and whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must all accept it as a fact, and our national policies must take account of it. (Excerpts of Harold Macmillan's Winds of Change speech made to the South African Parliament on 3 February 1960)

********************

The Barack Obama forces don’t seem to understand that they’re sailing against the wind, that they’re not supposed to be able to capture the Democratic nomination for president. The fight for the nomination, one of the best political dramas in decades, has always resembled a contest between realists and dreamers. The realists will tell you that there is a quality of protesting too much in the ritual chant of “Yes, we can!” that erupts so frequently at Obama rallies.

For months the realists have been arguing, in effect: No, he can’t. The most forceful arguments of the realists tend to take place in private, and centre on the ageing elephant in the living room: race. Their contention is that the country has come a long, long way, but that it is not yet ready to cross the finish line by installing a black man in the White House.

There are many variations on this theme. The realists (and they are not all Hillary Clinton supporters, by any means) will point out that there is still a great deal of racial prejudice in the U.S., and thus a substantial percentage of whites who will not vote for a black candidate for president under any circumstance.

Senator Obama, they note, is also struggling in his quest for Hispanic votes. There are also many white Democrats who say they would vote for a black candidate but are afraid their vote would be futile this year because not enough other whites have shown a willingness to vote for Senator Obama. They point out that he has not won a majority of the white votes in any of the contests thus far.

These voters will tell you that this year’s election is too important to take such a risk. Their view is that after eight years of George W. Bush, another four or eight years of Republican rule would be catastrophic. Added to these daunting challenges, the realists say, are all those voters who are not prejudiced but genuinely feel that Mr. Obama is not the best choice for president. After all, his résumé is thin, he’s not the best debater in the world and Hillary Clinton has demonstrated beyond a doubt that she is smart, tough and fully capable of being president.

“I look at the numbers, and they tell me he can’t win,” said a Democratic analyst, who asked not to be identified. “But then I look at the polls and the enthusiasm he is generating, and he seems to be closing in on Hillary by the hour.”

The easiest way to understand what is going on is to step across the generational divide. The realists tend to be older and come out of a political and racial experience that is often completely alien to Mr. Obama’s most fervent supporters, who tend to be younger. During a series of interviews on the campus of Stanford University, students expressed great interest in the election but seemed unconcerned with such factors as Mr. Obama’s race or perceived electability.

“The students like him because he’s a fresh face, a personality with fresh ideas,” said Julia Liebner, a human biology major. “Hillary may do great things for the country if she is elected, but I think the kids are responding to Obama’s more hopeful message and his idea of bringing people together.”

Ben Fried, who was interviewed as he straddled a bicycle under a sky that threatened a downpour at any moment, said that he had participated in many conversations about the election and that race had not been a factor in any of them. “I would just say the kids like Obama,” he said.

(Elizabeth Currid, a young, urban planning professor at the University of Southern California, told me recently: “This is a generation that really embraces diversity and equality.”)

A handful of interviews on a college campus is hardly a scientific survey. But well-educated young people are the distilled version of Mr. Obama’s supporters, and it’s a fact that younger people in the U.S. have had it with the bitterness, divisiveness and ineffectiveness that make government and politics in their eyes seem so unsavoury. They are in a better place than their elders on race. They are not shouldering the resentments of years and decades past. They are not parsing the differences between the Clinton and Obama health proposals, or obsessing over who would do better against John McCain. They are just fed up with the status quo, and they want change. And they’ve found a rock star who embodies their desire.

The advantage in this race is still substantially with Senator Clinton. The realists are not crazy, after all. But neither are the dreamers. Winds change. If you’re sailing against the wind today, it may be different tomorrow. And there are few things more powerful than the winds of history. (Winds of Change by BOB HERBERT, The New York Times)

********************

Yes, the winds of change are blowing throughout Malaysia. Everywhere you go, people are talking about change. Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is asking the voters to give Barisan Nasional five more years. But what Najib does not seem to comprehend is that the voters have already given Barisan Nasional the five years he is asking for. They gave it in March 2004. In fact, Malaysia has been having the same government for the last 50 years since Merdeka. But the five years since Abdullah Ahmad Badawi took over as Prime Minister in 2003 have come to nought. Abdullah did not deliver everything he promised in his 2004 Election Manifesto. In fact, he did exactly the opposite of what he promised. And don't think that the voters have not noticed.

Abdullah launched the Rancangan Malaysia Kesembilan (RMK9) or Ninth Malaysia Plan awhile back. But not one of his grand plans have taken off. Sure, some projects are being implemented. But these projects are mostly carry-forward projects of the RMK8. These are projects which were not completed in time during the last Malaysia Plan, the RMK8, and only now are seeing fruition. If anyone can be credited for these projects then it would have to be Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as these were conjured during his tenure as Prime Minister. In that sense, it is Mahathir and not Abdullah who is developing Malaysia, in spite of the fact that Mahathir is no longer the Prime Minister.

Back in 2002, soon after Mahathir announced his retirement, I wrote that one day we will look back on the 'good old days' and remark that, on hindsight, Mahathir is by far the better Prime Minister. That, I added, would be a bleak day for Malaysia when even Mahathir begins to look better than Abdullah.

I have always been a Mahathir critic. I have never denied this and I make no apologies for it. But my criticism is based on my ideals of a transparent government, a civil society, freedom of choice, an unshackled and independent media, and all those which many would label as 'western' values. But there is nothing 'western' about these values at all. They are universal values which are compatible with Islam or any other religion for that matter. No religion in existence would dispute opposition to discrimination, oppression and repression. The very foundation of Islam and all the major religions is justice. So how could what I hold dear be considered 'western' when all the religions emerged in the east, none in the west?

Abdullah's RMK9 is going to cost RM200 billion. Where Malaysia is going to find the money to fund these RM200 billion worth of projects is not clear. Then, even before any of these RMK9 projects can see maturity, Abdullah criss-crosses Malaysia to launch his so many 'Corridors'. These so-called Corridors are going to cost the nation in excess of RM1 trillion. Abdullah, the Sixth Prime Minister, is going to spend more money than that spent by the first five Prime Ministers combined. What Abdullah is going to spend over ten years will far exceed what was spent over 50 years before this. But it is not Abdullah who is going to pay for this spending spree. It will be us, the Rakyat, who will be made to pay. And just as I am sure that my name is Raja Petra Bin Raja Kamarudin, I am equally sure that the Rakyat will certainly be made to pay.

Abdullah's landslide win in the 2004 general election has given birth to an arrogance. Never before has the ruling coalition performed that well. Even the great Mahathir was not able to duplicate this. This 92% mandate from the Rakyat is interpreted as a blank cheque with a 'Double Zero' licence, a licence to kill, thrown in. No country gives its government 92% of the seats in Parliament unless the Rakyat believes in it without question and with no conditions attached.

2004, however, is not an accurate yardstick to measure one's popularity or gauge the Rakyat's support. The people had had enough. They wanted change. And they gave Abdullah his 92% victory with change in mind. They wanted to see a new Malaysia. They wanted to see a different government. They wanted to see an improvement over 22 years of Mahathir. But this did not happen. Don't even talk about improvement. Even if things stood still, that in itself would have been bad enough but acceptable nevertheless. But in Abdullah's case, things actually went into reverse. Matters became worse, not just remained the same, and certainly very, very far from better.

The Rakyat's clamour for change is not enough to tip the scales though. Just because the Rakyat have had enough is not sufficient to influence the election results. Malaysia's Elections Commission has transformed vote-rigging and gerrymandering into an art form. Electoral boundaries and constituencies have been drawn up to give the ruling coalition an unfair advantage. Malays, Chinese and Indians never vote en bloc. So, in the absence of block-voting, one set of voters can be played against the other. When the Chinese swing to the opposition, the sentiments of the Malays can be played up and the Chinese 'threat' can be bandied about to 'unite' the Malays under Umno. This has always worked in the past and there is no reason it can't continue to work. The same goes when the Malays swing to the opposition like in 1999. Then the Chinese can be subtly 'persuaded' to vote government by constantly raising the spectre of 'May 13'. Then, to complete this very delicate 'balancing act', the Indians will deliver the crucial 'deciding votes'. Traditionally, 90% of the Indian voters vote ruling party. This has always been so and there is no reason to believe it can't continue to be so.

No one expected the large turnout and mass support, not the BERSIH organisers nor the people behind HINDRAF. Somehow it just happened. The timing was right, though by accident rather than by design, and the Rakyat rallied behind BERSIH and HINDRAF.

Then the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) did something no one thought it would do. It sat down to discuss the possibility of offering the five HINDRAF leaders under ISA detention, now popularly known as the HINDRAF 5, seats to contest under its party banner. Two of the HINDRAF 5 are DAP members so DAP was not about to allow what are currently the most popular Hindu activists in Malaysia to get 'stolen' by an Islamic party. Before you could scream MAKKAL SAKHTI, the HINDRAF 5 were offered seats under the DAP banner. PAS had to be contented with having an Indian female lawyer as its candidate in Johor. In one swoop, PAS erased the negative image that the Barisan Nasional controlled media had been painting it with. This was not only a woman but a Hindu to boot and she was a candidate on the PAS party ticket.

Barisan Nasional was caught off-guard. The old strategy used in undermining PAS can no longer apply. Sure, it may be only one Hindu candidate, and one swallow does not make a summer. But, over the last few days, HINDRAF activists have been riding around town wearing PAS T-shirts and holding PAS flags high above their heads. Never mind that DAP and not PAS is contesting that particular seat. The HINDRAF supporters just want to demonstrate their love for PAS even though they are doing so at a DAP ceramah.

Barisan Nasional is now in a daze. Sure, they have gerrymandered the seats well. They have carved out the electoral boundaries to take into account the racial make-up. And they have also 'injected' new 'voters' and transferred postal votes to those constituencies where the opposition is strong. But this strategy only works if the margins are small and if the Malays and Chinese vote opposite to each other and if 90% of the Indian voters play their traditional role of 'king-maker'. If, however, the Malays, Chinese and Indians all vote opposition as one united voice, then many seats will be lost which may result in Barisan Nasional finally losing its two-thirds majority in Parliament, not to mention a few states thrown in as well.

But this, and this alone, is not enough. In 1969, the opposition garnered 55.1% of the votes but still the ruling party got in, though minus its two-thirds. In 1999, the opposition garnered 46% of the votes and still the ruling party got in, and with a two-thirds majority on top of that. Since 1969 and 1999, the Elections Commission has 'fine-tuned' the gerrymandering so that the opposition will need 60% of the votes to form the government, and even then it is not sure if it will form the government with a two-thirds majority. That is what the opposition is up against. So, even if the Malays, Chinese and Indians unite as a solid front, it will still not be enough. There must be one more factor thrown in, the faktor dalaman or internal factor -- the element of sabotage within the ranks of Barisan Nasional.

Annuar Musa is not going to be the Menteri Besar of Kelantan if Umno wins that state. Instead, Awang Adek will be that Menteri Besar. So Annuar Musa will do his best to ensure that Umno does not win Kelantan.

Idris Jusoh has dropped several Terengganu warlords. These warlords would rather see PAS win Terengganu just for the satisfaction of 'paying back' Idris Jusoh for dropping them. Hundreds of supporters of these 'retired' warlords have held demonstrations in front of Idris Jusoh's residence and the police had to be called in to break up these 'illegal assemblies' that, for this first time, were organised by Umno against Umno.

Shahidan Kassim was dropped from the candidates' list and thereby would have to retire as the Menteri Besar of Perlis as well. He stormed into Abdullah's office in Putrajaya and only after the seventh attempt was he able to meet the Prime Minister. Under immense pressure and Shahidan's threat of handing the state over to the opposition, Abdullah relented and reluctantly gave him back his seat. This upset Umno's Secretary-General who had been trying to get rid of Shahidan because of his many sex scandals, the latest involving a very young girl who was forced to have an abortion to get rid of Shahidan's baby she was carrying.

Shahidan retaliated by declaring that he would give the Parliament seats to the opposition “so that I would not have to see their fucking faces for the next five years.” The about-to-be-killed-off aspiring Parliamentarians in turn want to make sure that Shahidan never gets to continue as the Menteri Besar of Perlis -- and, even if he does, it will not be for more than two years. And Najib's response to all this is that Umno will take action against all those Umno members who sabotage the election. What more could Najib say after declaring that he is just fed up with the infighting in Kelantan which has dashed Umno's hopes of winning back that state?

The Chinese voters in Penang want to give the Parliament seats to the opposition but they are not sure whether they should do the same with the state seats. Maybe the opposition should be sent to Parliament while the state is safely retained in the hands of Barisan Nasional. This is the dilemma facing the Penang Chinese. They are worried if they give the state to the opposition then Penang, for the first time, might see a Malay Chief Minister. Anwar Ibrahim has overcome this fear by promising that, if the opposition manages to grab Penang, the opposition will appoint a Chinese as its new Chief Minister.

But this still does not address the other fears. What about development? For sure Penang will face what Kelantan is now facing if the opposition forms the new state government. The opposition will now have to work very hard in convincing the Penang voters that Penang is already so developed, in fact overdeveloped, that maybe some of the development should be scaled down as there is a limit to what the island can support. Penang is already getting too congested because of the development that many now prefer to stay out of the city or out of the island altogether just to get away from the maddening crowd. What more development does Penang need? What it needs, instead, is a scaling down so that Penang can revert to being the Pearl of the Orient which it once was but no longer is.

In the other states as well the infighting is intense. Whether Barisan Nasional, in particular Umno, closes ranks these next six days is left to be seen. If it does, then the opposition will be given a run for its money. If not, then the opposition may yet come in with at least 60 Parliament seats plus a state or two. But the opposition would need 75 seats to deny Barisan Nasional its two-thirds majority in Parliament. How would it do this? I suppose many within Umno too would like to know the answer to that question so maybe I should stop here for now lest I reveal too much which will allow Barisan Nasional time to pre-empt our moves.

In the meantime, you voters should not worry too much. Just take a look at the two videos here and make sure you come out to vote come 8 March 2008.

The only reason Abdullah Badawi called dissolution of Parliament one year earlier is because the situation of his leadership will not get any better. Just look what he did to this country in just 4 years: rampant corruption, unplanned spending, and lack of transparency in the administration, collapse of the integiry of the judicairy, rising cost of living, sluggish economy and dismal international competetiveness, constituted and unconstituted racialisme and the list goes on. They will keep telling us to give them a new mandate, excuse me Mr. Hadhari I am a Muslim and according to Islamic teaching we have to fight and oppose sinful doings and all that is wrong. And you government is full of sinful and wrong doings.

And please do not tell us being anti-government and not voting BN is a western doing that is not of our culuture. Hello Pak Lah, it is Mahatma Ghandi whom thaught us of peaceful and non-violent resistance. And the (rigged and unfair election) is an example.

Barisan Nasional's logo is a scale that tips to the side of the elites and their cronies

Though many Malays professionals appear to be more receptive to change, the other Malays in general seem to still believe that they have no choice but to trust umno to protect the Malays. The self serving umno leaders know this and use this to their full advantage. They have also been taught not to trust leaders like YM Raja Petra and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Malays and the other races have to think as Malaysians and look and act beyond their ethnic origins.
We can now dream of the day when a Bidayuh or a Christian Kadazan or a Hindu Tamil or a Huddhist Chinese stands for election for whatever post and no one bothers about his ethnic origin or religious background as long as he a Malaysian.

MCA's Ng Yen Yen was chased away by malays and chinese in Batu Talam. The same thing happened last week in Bukit Koman and Sempalit, all in the Raub constituency.

There is lots more happening on the ground than is reported or heard by the people. As I said before, the malays and chinese are moving over to the opposition.

People have been emergised and emboldened by the Bersih and Hindraf rallies. They dare to be different, dare to say NO!

All the Malays will eventually become financially strong in time to come. They will have so much money to spent for the next few generations, until nothing is more important than wealth alone, including, no need to work at all, no need for their children to go to school, just enjoy life to the fullest, while the Chinese and Indians work for them as drivers and servants. Some of them will even make it to international level of recognition, including being the first human on earth to fly out of the solar-system!

Slight change to the original Lyrics.. The rest stays t he same..

I follow the Gombak
Down to Kuala Klang
Listening to the wind of change
As Voting Day arrives
Malaysians plebiscite
Listening to the wind of change

The world closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future's in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Chorus:
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever

I follow the Gombak
Down to Kuala Klang
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

The wind of change blows straight
Into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring
The freedom bell for peace of mind
Let your ghazal sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
In the wind of change

Nice summary RPK and makes for a very interesting read

I'm glad someone else is finally beginning to see that the Second Penang Bridge is just another white elephant which will bleed the country dry and turn Georgetown into a bigger nightmare than it already is

A little imagination and thought put into the Penang transport problem would save billions of Ringgits and rescue Penang from strangulation by motor vehicle

This is what you get from an old, tired and worn out government devoid of imagination and ideas

All they can do it repeat Mahathir's Development at All Costs philosophy in the hope that voters will mistake it for dynamism

Penang Gerakan agrees with Malaysians that UMNO is corrupted to the core but since Malays are all the way to support UMNO no matter what,Penang Chinese therefore have to support Chinese parties to ensure that their right would not be curtailed by UMNO.

Gerakan forgets that the reason why UMNO is so arrogant and corrupted is because MIC.MCA and Gerakan are abetting UMNO to go all the way to be corrupted.UMNO alone cannot form a government,UMNO has to depend on beggars such as MIC,MCA and Gerakan to hold on yo power.DAP and PKR plus PAS could form the government if all beggar parties were to be defeated in this coming general election.

In Penang, poster put up by Gerakan with words to suggest that UMNO is continue to be powerful so Chinese have to support beggars parties to ensure they could continue to beg for us Chinese.Without beggr parties,no one will beg for us.

Do you want beggars to represent us or do you want Anwar Ibrahim and Guan Eng to represent us.Both are not beggars but politicians.

There is also talk here in Sabah of undercurrents within UMNO. It seems Musa Aman was on the Federal list and not State list when originally endorsed by Pak Lah...17 UMNO divisions went to see Pak Lah saying they would not support MA as Sabah CM. MA jumped on the next flight to KL carrying 20 "durians" (you all know what I mean!). The 17 "rebel" divisions were appeased, so too was Pak Lah...the official list announced later listed MA as defending his Sg. Sibuga state seat. Also talk of dropped incumbents undermining BN candidates etc. Let's hope the people of Sabah vote wisely in the spirit of the early 1980's....remember the downfall and subsequent collapse of Parti Berjaya?

BTW, Sabah YBs and ex-YBs are old hands at getting hold of unauthorised, unaccredited doctorate degrees...try and ask some of them what their thesis was about and they'll be totally lost or blurr. So called PhDs from unknown and even non-existent institutions. Sabah has the highest number of politicians with dubious doctorate degrees...what an insult to all those who have worked hard for their postgraduate degrees to be told they are in the same academic boat with these idiots! BTW word is that one of these YBs got someone to write his thesis for him and the writer managed to buy a new car using his "writing fees"!!

A vote for BN -- Pak Lah will say we support HIM which we are not. So there's no other choice, I don't want to be seen supporting a useless PM, so I have to go with opposition.

I don't want to see after 8th march, Pak Lah said,
1. "The people has shown great support for me to continue as PM!"
2. "They still support us after we raised so many things because they understand what we are doing."
3. "They have confident in me."
4. "The people have spoken, and this shows that they do not trust bloggers and opposition!"
5. "The majority want us to lead them to a better future."
6. His whisper to Khairi "We can do what we want for the next 5 years. Malaysian are so easy to be cheated."

To force Pak Lah resigns, and BN to have a new leader, we must vote opposition this TIME, there's the only we can kill Pak Lah's career from outside. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Never a time that we can realise the under current for change is getting unstoppable. This is simply because the voters are better informed with multi channel of news and views, and the ability to THINK and ANALYSE the scenarios and situations far better than yester years. 8th of March, 080308, may provide the balance of power for the unavoidable winds of change.

The regulars voters must have already made up their mind, now it is the time for the unmotivated potential voters to get out of their comfort zone and fear to cast the vote in favour of change.

The younger voters are mainly in favour of change as they feel enough is enough, and for their own future as well as their children something drastic has to be done to avert further crisis to the social economic landscape of this nation.

This is the best time to bring about the change. The corruption has reached an intolerable level, micro economy has deteriorated and may become total collapse or implosion, the wealth divide has skewed so much that the poor people will begin to become uneasy, and so we will have more social problems if the situation is not changed.

Together we can give the BR the chance to change the destiny of Malaysia.

The Winds of Change are blowing as I could steadily feel it after chasing for a ceramah from Taman Kosas to Kuala Ampang last night sunday 2 March. Missed the one at 7pm at Taman Kosas as it was over by 7.30pm due to a power failure I was told. So we hurried over to Kuala Ampang by 8.30pm to catch DSAI , Azman Ali & Tian Chua giving support to Hj. Saari Hj Sungib of PAS. Crowd was predominantly Malaysian chinese and Malaysian indians. It was a cooling evening until the winds of change brought on a shower of rain. Up came the umbrellas to greet the speakers with nature's "shower of blessings". The crowd did not dissipate only the rain. It was a solid 90 minutes of refreshing commitment by the opposition speakers to the winds of change. I felt rejuvenated. There is still hope for Malaysia seeing the unity between barisan rakyat component parties. There is still saturday 8 march that we personally have to DEAL with. My fellow countrymen please ride on this winds of change, like the eagle soaring high on the thermals. This is our only chance to seize on this timely God sent 2008 wind of change to bring upon the dawn of a new era. The next wind of change is a good 5 years away, we may not even have the window of opportunity to get things changed by then. By then we may just have to glide down to the valley of death if we fail to get airborne on this 12th General Elections. Deny the BN the 2/3 majority. Voting for the opposition is truly a vote for democracy. A democratic government definitely does NOT need 2/3 majority to govern effectively. Attend a ceramah near you to personally feel the winds of change. There is no substitute for first hand experience of the changing winds gently blowing against your face.

dear rpk,

your last paragraph telling us not to worry is very encouraging, as if you know something historic is going to happen. my take is, we know most of MT's readers are pro opposition; that said, it's left to us to inform the on-the-fence voters to vote for a change. in my opinion, what's important is making sure the voters have equal access to information. if so, then i will respect those who still stick to BN, because it will then be up to them to choose who to vote for.

i thank you and of course, your whole team, for all your hard work setting up and maintaining this blog, despite all the dirty attempts to pull you down. i remember you getting dragged to help with investigation when some umno chaps come up and lodged reports against you. then of course there is this guy who recently sent a lawyer letter to you from a malay firm (letter written by someone else, signed by the lawyer). well, i dont even remember their names. in chinese i think we call those two guys KEH LEH FEH (extras in a movie). good thing you persevered.

finally, even if BN manages to maintain its two thirds majority, i sure hope things will keep getting better in the near future, especially when more and more people realize that our current PM is incompetent (i don't think anyone with minimal education will miss that as time goes by), and in the 13th general election, we will have 5 more batches of eligible, young voters who have access to the internet, while 5 batches of old folks with only the mass media as their source of news will have been gone. things can only look better?

rest assured, you have done malaysia a huge favor. i sincerely thank you.

101 East by Al-Jazeera had Najib answering to the following question in a threatening manner:

Q. On the HINDRAF rally recently. What you say demonstration they would call it a rally, with the point of trying to present a petition to the Prime Minister at Parliament. They were a rather modest crowd of 700 people and yet the force of police that turned out against them was much higher and rather immediate. Where was the threat?

Najib: The threat can come first of all (from) the people who are involved in this who may resort to throwing stones. That actually happened in the Batu Caves area, organised by HINDRAF. Secondly there is also the danger that other groups for example the Malays in Kampung Baru, who can get quite agitated and they may organize their demonstrations and this could lead to something very serious in terms of a multiracial society.

MALAYS in KAMPUNG BARU?? Does he have a support group there, or some hired fanatics waiting for his signal? This was a devious insinuation by Najib, against the Indians. Looks like BN has started its "May 13" campaign already, with MIC and Gerakan giving warning to Indians to toe the line...or else...

Whoever able to form a majority, will be invited to form a government by the Kind. Simple as that.

Please! We are the People of Malaysia, UNITES. This Year 2008 MARCH 8TH should mark the BEGINNING OF THE NEW ERA, "THE ERA OF CHANGE". It is HISTORY IN THE MAKING, MAKING CHANGE BEGINS WITH US, THE PEOPLE OF MALAYSIA.

Vote for CHANGE, Vote is for CHANGE, Vote BARISAN RAKYAT IS FOR US, THE PEOPLE OF MALAYSIA.

PEOPLE OF MALAYSIA, GO ALL OUT TO CAPTURE WHAT WE NEED TO MAKE THAT CHANGE, BE IT STATE OR PARLIAMENT!
DENY bn 2/3 MAJORITY! WE NEED A DEMOCRATIC AND PROGRESSIVE NATION. To the Chinese voters, "MAKE THE CHANGE" that begins with the first zodiac Rat Year!

On a different note, the postal votes as said are not as they should have been - manipulated, marked or watched by bosses?! How could one clear thinking personnel vote courageously when a big obstruction is being placed upon a person's own right of choice of candidate? How can the system of postal votes be improved?

Supposed in a democratic country, are civil servants like police and army allowed to vote to their own choices without hindrance?! Surely this does not happen in a truly democratic country! We definitely hope the process is closely watched!

There is no balance! The BALANCE Do Not Exist, The only BALANCE is TO DENY them 2/3 Majority. Only 50/50 in Government is BALANCE! The Balance is with BARISAN RAKYAT.

Please Spread The Truth! The People Of Malaysia.

He said the key to making sure that Singapore continues to succeed is to ensure that government officers have integrity, and remain clean, incorruptible and reliable.

Singapore ministers do not lead lavish lifestyles, such as owning private jets, he said.

'I fly Singapore Airlines. There are others with bigger cars than me. And I don't own a private jet,' he said.

'All government officers will travel commercial.'

If only the number of people attending the ceramahs can be translated into votes, then I am sure many BN political wannabes will have dreams shattered. The political ceramahs by the opposition parties in Penang state and elsewhere recently are playing to full houses. If that trend continues, we can safely say goodbye to BN's 2/3 majority. Of course this is only the start of the end of BN's 50 year rule of corruption, nepotism & cronyism and racial polarisation.

Coming from a Penangnite I've got no problem whether the next CM is a Chinese or a Bumi or an Indian, for that matter. As long as he/she is a competent person.

With regards to your analogy with the US Presidential Race, I take issue with you on Obama in that his message is consistently of 'Hope' which I think is misplace. Just look at what happened to Malaysia the last 4 years of the present PM's rule that Malaysia gave him over 90% vote based on his promises and hope.

While in the political wilderness, candra founded a social justice organisation (sjo). It was a full time job and people actually worried if he could earn enough. His noble answer was that if he "....earned less, just spend less".
He soon rose to fame on the backs of the people's indignation at the governments corruption, injustices and evil.
Then his daughters grew up and one of them applied for a Universiti place. Anuar gave his daughter a scholarship and that bought candra to Anuar's side. He resigned from the sjo saying that he needed money for his daughter's education. He became Anuar's think tank and well paid for it, even got a job as professor at MU. He was so happy that he even organised a human rights seminar and invited mahatew to officiate its opening.
When Anuar was sacked by mahatew, candra's loyalty to Anuar didn't wavered initially. He joined adilan and fought for Anuar's case.
Then something happened along the way. Anuar' funds dried up after the 1999 GE, and candra severed all ties with Anuar and left in a huff. No more money, what some more.
Now suddenly he has surfaced, looking and talking very prosperous. He has new masters now. And like all people without principles and after being bought over, now condemns their old fiiends who once help them when they were down. He believes bn will win again, so he is in for a long lucrative friendship with them. Snakes will get along with snakes.

Abdullah launched the Rancangan Malaysia Kesembilan (RMK9) or Ninth Malaysia Plan awhile back. But not one of his grand plans have taken off. Sure, some projects are being implemented. But these projects are mostly carry-forward projects of the RMK8. Abdullah's RMK9 is going to cost RM200 billion.
----------------------------------------------------
FYI, The Ninth Malaysia Plan was drafted during Mahathir's era. we have put up our comprehensive proposal and plans as what was done in the previous Malaysia Plan. It was supervised by Mahathir's team at PMD. In fact, it was launched as it was planned and approved, by Abdullah with slight changes. However, the implementation was not done and all the Corridors that Abdullah announced was not in the plan and never actually brought up and discussed by the Committee. Abdullah just plucked them from the sky in his many dreams while sleeping at work! So you know why he claimed that Corridors are his ideas.

Symbiosis Existence

In the last 300 years the Malays and non-Malays have co-existed in Malaysia rather peacefully. Naturally there are times where there are conflicts and tension between the two groups. However by far and large their existence is one of symbiosis, mutual existence in peace and harmony to the benefit of both groups.

Some may disagree with above view and said that the two groups have in the past existed apart and in parallel without much interaction. That bulk of the Malays were in the kampongs and rural areas while the non-Malays, particularly the Chinese were in the towns and city.

And that today’s conflict between the Malays and non-Malays is the result of both groups coming into contact, as the Malays move into the urban areas, they begin to compete for the same scare resources (business opportunities and government contracts) which the non-Malays has enjoyed until now.

This is not entirely correct, because when two organisms co-exist together, even of the same species, they will compete against each others for living space, sunlight and other scare resource needed for their individual survive.

Hence it is how organisms compete rather than competition itself that determines whether they exist together peacefully and harmonically. Competition per se does not turn one of them into a predator.

It this respect, there are two fundament shift in the way the Malays and non-Malays compete.

The first is the introduction of New Economic Policy. The ruling Government, made up of component parties that represent both the Malays and non-Malays, has introduced the NEP, a form of affirmative actions. The NEP in turn alters the nature of competition between the two groups.

In theory, the NEP aims to help the Malays, who are from rural areas and thus were less sophisticated, to compete with the urbanite non-Malays. In itself it is a noble and worthwhile aim.

In every society there are marginalised groups which are less able to compete. For moral and humane reasons, a progressive society should make an effort to help these marginalised groups to better themselves.

From a sociological viewpoint such effort is also necessary for the society to continue to prospers and exist peacefully and harmoniously. For sooner or later the disfranchised part of society will change the status quo. The current Hindraf movement is one such change.
Some time these changes are to the disadvantage of all parties concerned.
Notwithstanding its benefits all affirmative actions have its drawback. It is open to abuses and bred corrupt practises. Where it is successful, it creates unsustainable artifice competitive environment.

This is what has happened in the implementation of the NEP. The bulk of the NEP benefit has accrued to those connected to the ruling Government, Malays and non-Malays alike. Political parties connected to the ruling Barisan Government have hijack the NEP with the lion share going to the UMNO members.

To masquerade their corrupt practise the ruling Barisan Government has turn the whole NEP into a race issue. Questions regarding the NEP and its implementation are made into a challenge of the Malay rights and position enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution, which is not to be tolerated.

Hence the change in competitive environment bought about NEP to eradicate poverty takes on a racial dimension and become a race issue.

The second fundamental shift is the way in which a small segment within the Malays community chooses to compete with the non-Malays. In an attempt to champion the Malays rights these individual resolve to zero sum mentality, taking an “us against them” stand. Hence predator actions like kris kissing and destroying another’s place of worship become justifiable.

The interaction between the Malays and non-Malays in last few decades has been marked by these two fundament shift. They have altered the way the Malays and non-Malays co-existed and competed.

The challenge facing Malaysians, the Malays and non-Malays alike, is to understand the change in their competitive environment and how to come to terms with these two fundamental shifts. Alternative Malaysians need to instigate a new competitive environment that is free from race discrimination and predator actions.

Last call for those undecided voters on who you shall vote in this Saturday.

To Malay Bumis:

- Only Malay themselves can topple a government and no other race can be PM without the support of Malays.

- If you vote opposition front, either an "anak Melayu" Anwar Ibrahim or another Malay leader from PAS will become a new PM. But this scenario is unlikely to happen soon with the present unfair Malaysian election system.

- If you vote BN meaning you have chosen a corrupted BN government like Indonesian Suharto regime. Don't crying when you and your grandchildren look back 30 years later on rampant corruption in the government and poor managed economy.

To Non-Malay Bumis:

- To prevent your religious right being eroded is say NO to BN.

- To prevent your native land and jobs being taken away by foreign illegal immigrants is say NO to BN.

To Chinese:

- You have chosen a monster-like UMNO in 1999 who bit back on you immediately after election. Don't repeat the same mistake in 2008.

- Don't be ill-treated and threaten continually by UMNO extremists for another 50 years.

- Don't be afraid of PAS Islamic state since UMNO's Islamic state is already proven more corrupted and unfair to non-Muslims.

- BN government is insulting non-bumi intelligence by distributing "petty goodies" before general election.

- If you vote BN, please don't complain on NEP, overcrowd Chinese school, body snatched away, rampant crime and corruption, etc.

To Indian:

- Since you have eaten chilli from BN for last 50 years, you shall know how spicy it was.

Postal voting secrecy compromised: polls watchdog
Athi Veeranggan | Mar 6, 08 7:35pm

During his observation, Mafrel northern region coordinator BK Ong discovered that all the army and police personnel were required to fill up a separate identity declaration form consisting of their name, identity card number and ballot paper' serial number prior to voting.

Although voting was carried out privately, each voter was compelled to enclose together both his ballot paper and identity declaration form inside the postal vote envelope before putting it into the ballot bag.

mafrel military postal vote casting 060308 policeUpon checking the postal vote envelope, the identity declaration form will clearly reveal the identity of the voter and who he had voted for.

"Voting secrecy is among the most fundamental principles of the democratic process. It should not be compromised," Ong said.

Mafrel discovered this ‘tainted’ electoral process when observing postal voting at the Bukit Gedung army base in Bayan Lepas and Northeast District police headquarters in Georgetown.

For the first time, the Election Commission has accredited Mafrel as the country's 12th general election watch observers.

mafrel military postal vote casting 060308 letterThe commission allowed only 333 Mafrel volunteers as official election observers in polling stations this year. The accreditation seems to have paid off as Mafrel's four-man team led by Ong made this discovery.

"We do not know whether EC, the police or army officials are behind the introduction of the identity declaration form. But the most important issue is voting and voter's secrecy has been compromised. This is an election offence," he asserted.

EC's lack of enforcement of the election laws has compromised the confidentiality of one's vote and made a mockery of the country's democratic process, said Ong.

Fears confirmed

Under provisions stipulated in Section 5 Part II of the Election Offences Act 1954, one is prohibited from obtaining or revealing the identity of voters and their votes, such as names, identity card numbers and ballot paper serial numbers.

"If convicted for such an offence, one faces a maximum one-year jail or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both.

mafrel military postal vote casting 060308 unitSuspicion has often been cast on the postal voting process conducted for army and police personnel.

The country has 220,000 postal votes.

Mafrel’s revelation today seems to confirm fears that postal votes have been manipulated and the secrecy of voters compromised.

"The identity declaration form instills fear on the army and police personnel who want to vote freely without fear or favour," said Ong.

Another serious flaw noted in the election process for army and police personnel is that the voting was managed and conducted by police and army officers themselves.

Although EC officials and appointed agents shall handle the voting process, Ong expressed shock that this did not happen in the army and police bases.

"EC officials and agents were nowhere around," he claimed.

Bandar Tun Razak (BTR)

The infamous tan chai hole is shamelessly standing for the third time.
What did he ever do for BTR?
In Taman Bkt Anggerik there are electrical outages every month. There are also water cuts from few hours to few days EVERY month without fail for the past 30 odd years. He never even help to bring up the matter with the authorities.
He and his henchman take over public community halls and use them for their private purpose. For example in Taman Connaught, if you want to play table tennis, you have to pay RM 50.00 to join and RM 10.00 every month. Where the money goes, nobody knows, but it is in the hands of mca people. When the table tennis tables (which were donated free) get spoilt, they are not replaced.
Or if you want to place at the OUG community hall, where the tables are also donated, you have to pay RM 50.00 to join and thereafter RM12.00 monthly collected by mca gangster loong peng sum. Again where the money goes nobody knows.
In Seputeh vote Teresa Kok of DAP.
In Bandar Tun Razak vote Tan Sri Khalid of Keadilan. This man is a true friend -in the worst times he is still supporting his friend Anuar Ibrahim unlike snakes and dishonest people like candra muzaffar or ha ha ha nallakarupan.

The Chinese in Malaysia, where did they come from? These Chinese are the descendants of a people who came from a land far away from our shores. Many of their ancestors endured
thousands of years of hardship of a kind we couldn't even begin to imagine. Floods, droughts, winter storms, dust storms that blanket the sky and choke the nostrils, earthquakes, invasions
from swarms of locusts and worst of all invasions from two legged locusts of the most brutal kind. You name it, they've been through it! They were forced to their knees time and time again,
but nothing has been able to break their indomitable spirit, the same indomitable spirit that would have galvanized admiral Zhang he to circumnavigate the Globe had he not have been prevented
from doing so by his Emperor. They never stayed on their knees because they knew they had to stay on their own two feet. They refused to moan and groan about their condition because they
knew that such an attitude would increase their hardships and turn them into a race of beggars. Their scholars and scientists had a thirst for knowledge that has brought them to where they
are today. But NEVER! NEVER! in their wildest dreams could they have known that their descendants would have been looking down with great pride on one of man's greatest engineering
feats: THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA - the ONLY MAN-MadE FEATURE that can be observed from OUTER SPACE! Talk of EXTREME! This IS extreme! The ASTRONAUTS were put into
orbit from where they observed this fantastic feat of construction, from a rocket designed, constructed and blasted into orbit through technology acquired the hard way. One day in the not so
distant future, they will improve their technology and land their astronauts 78 400 000 km away on the face of the ancient Roman god of war - Mars. They will want to do it THEIR WAY.

What is the secret of these Chinese? How do they turn hardships to work to their advantage? They grab these hardships by the throat and apply HARD WORK to defeat these obstacles. To
them obstacles are to be confronted and turned into OPPORTUNITIES. They are a PRACTICAL people. They will do whatever it takes to ensure their SURVIVAL by adAPTING to their environ-
ment. But most of them will not surrender their CULTURAL HERITAGE which they envisage as promoting greater diversity to any multi-cultural society they adapt to. They want to be useful
and loyal citizens of any society they attach themselves to. They do not want to be hitchhikers. They recognise that hitchhikers are transients leaving behind nothing of substance.

Come March 8, many of them will present themselves at the polling stations. They will caste their vote and then return to what they have been doing best: contributing to the economy of Malaysia,
in no small measure. Who they vote for is their business. Free will is the purpose of the exercise. What is important is that they exercise their RIGHT TO VOTE if only to continue being an
important factor in the economy of their country. My bet is that they will vote for survival to enable them to pursue prosperity, longevity and good health, not necessarily in that order.

Come March 8, after a hearty breakfast of "dim sum" and chinese tea, I'll be heading to the polls myself. I'll be standing in line next to good company. Anybody with a personality like Justice Bao
Zheng on his record books has to be good company.

East Highlander, are you out there? I don't know if you'll be proven wrong or not but I think the Chinese will choose the economy, notwithstanding Justice Bao Zheng. Have a nice day at the polls.

Congratulations on your being proven wrong, East Highlander! I'm sure you're ecstatic. We all are.

The Chinese voted for the economy, not the BN economy but the economy of the people of Malaysia. They're going to get right back to
HARD WORK and improve the economy for the better. That's good for all of us. Thanks to the indomitable Chinese!

I don't like to dampen your spirits but I'm sure you've heard of bribery and corruption, like in CROSSOVERS engineered by the PUPPET
MASTERS. Remember Sabah, not so long ago? These puppet masters are not the candidates in an election; they remain well camouflaged
behind the candidates. The secret of their success lies in their concealment. Sometimes their camouflage is removed quite by accident,
as in the recent video ..... and they don't like it. Woe to the one who reveals their identity. The contents of this video played a crucial part in
swaying the sentiments of the voters in Election 08. It cut across ALL RACES. The results of the election have increased the misfortune of
"the mad and drunk actor" many times.

Puppet masters who specialize in bribery and corruption have been around for eons. Perhaps the best remembered puppet master is the
one who offered the ultimate bribe to a woman named Eve, ..... "you will be like God", if the story is to be believed.

In the meantime let's breathe in the fresh air.
